TRE spool
I have a TRE spool just lyin around and I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on it. I know it's suppose to help with awd dyno's, and 50/50 to the wheels, but i've heard if your car is more of a street car u shouldn't go the spool route....is there anything else, I basically got this part so I could run on a fwd dyno safely. Also how hard is the install on this part??

Re: TRE spool
Is it the viscous eliminator or a full center diff spool?
|
Re: TRE spool
The spool installs inside the center diff, so you would have to take the tranny apart to install it. You can run just a welded VC for dynoing, which doesn't require pulling the tranny.

Re: TRE spool
Its the full spool from TRE. I heard there was a way to install it without removing the transmission??
|
Re: TRE spool
You can install it with the tranny in the car, but you still have to take much of the tranny apart from the passenger side.

Re: TRE spool
any links or info on how to do it??
|
Re: TRE spool
Just sell the spool and buy a welded VC, you will be happier in the end.

Re: TRE spool
Ok I did a lot of looking around and found numerous people sayin the spool isn't a good idea if you want your car to be a street car. Well I do, soo this isn't the way to go, all I want is to be able to dyno my car safely....is there anybody running a spool in their car and what are their thoughts on it?? Where would I find a welded VC.

Re: TRE spool
If you run a spool center diff, the rear end will hop in tighter turns. If you dont mind that it should be ok.
As far as changing it while its in the car, you have to remove the pass. side case of the tranny, the viscous coupler (with tough snap ring pliers), then remove the 5th gear fork and synchro (gotta use a punch to get the pin out of the shift fork). then a 31 or 32 mm socket to remove the two big nuts in order to remove 5th gear and the other gear (i forget what it is). then the next layer of the case will pull off. from there you can remove the center diff. (carefull though, there is a tiny ball bearing you need to save to put back in). as far as a welded VC... you can get a VC eliminator from tre for pretty cheap too.. mabye just go that route. for pics and such look on vfaq.com there is a good write up there on a rebuild that will basically show you what you will see inside. good luck! j |
Re: TRE spool
The other gear is 5th gear intermediate. You'll need a 32mm socket. lock the trans in 2 diff gears to get the nuts off or use an impact....i like wedging pennies inbtw 5th gear and 5th intermediate to break the nuts loose.

Re: TRE spool
Alright well I guess I'm just going to install the spool, if something breaks....or goes wrong, just a reason to upgrade. I'll just install the spool when I upgrade the clutch, thanks for all the info....I have a few buddies around that really know their stuff that can help put it in.
