1G Auto to Manual Swap
What can I use off of a 93 AWD laser 5 speed, to a 92 Eclipse GSX automatic.
I am putting a manual in the GSX. |
Re: Question
Well, I'd start with everything related to the manual transmission. Its a fairly big task, I'd rather swap an engine that do a AT to MT swap. Tranny, pedal assembly, shifter and shifter cables, clutch lines, clutch master and slave cylinders, etc. Also keep in mind there are engine differences between the AT and MT cars, they have different ECU's, fuel injectors, turbos, and exhaust manifolds. I'd deffinately swap all that stuff on too. Whats wrong with the Laser and why are you doing this?

Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
Thread re-named and moved to advanced tech. The reason I put this is advanced tech is because he is asking about switching more than just the transmission and drivetrain.

Mike's Laser has a salvage title and no first gear versus the GSX is spotless (from what I recall) and has a clean title. The Laser he has was posted up for sale on here last summer by it's former owner if that rings a bell. |
Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
like stated earlier the laser has a salvage title, and the GSX I have is spotless. I love working on my cars, and being in the garage. The GSX is my baby, and it could be an interesting project, and to help me learn more. Plus it keeps me out of trouble up town.

Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
I know he didn't do it personally but Matt R (AlpineTSI) has a 92 Talon that was AT to MT converted, and I believe he is fairly well versed in what all is involved in doing doing it.

Im looking into this because it will be done within the next month on my car. Is there any major Differences in the parts needed for a 2g? |

If I were to do the swap on a 1G I wouldn't do it to stock MT parts though, I would upgrade from there(2G exh mani, 550's or bigger, 16G or bigger, EPROM ECU). To me it doesn't make sense to upgrade from AT to MT parts while doing the swap unless any of the parts were bad or you had a good line on those parts for cheap and working well. |
Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
As stated in Tom's NAME, he drives a 2G which do not have differences like 1G's.

Also, that is why I mentioned if I were to do the swap in a 1G.... |

Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
Somewhere in this, you also should note the rear diff gearing is different in the Auto. So that needs to be changed as well. Some other things to consider are the wiring for the reverse lights, neutral safety etc. Eric likely has the details on those things, he took care of it when we did DJ's conversion a few months ago. There is some cutting on the firewall etc to do to mount the clutch master cylinder as well some creativity involved with the cable install. Not a small project by any means.

*assuming both vehicles are completely stock. -Transmission w/shifter brackets/etc. -transfercase -rear end assembly (atleast the diff, maybe a 4 bolt upgrade if the axles are different). -slave cylinder -line from slave cylinder assembly to clutch pedal -clutch master cylinder assembly (firewall modifications required, as raptor mentioned) -clutch/flywheel -starter plate? (not sure on this one but I think they are different -cams -exhaust manifold -turbo w/lines -injectors -fuel pump? (again, might be the same) -ecu obviously all the reverse wiring sensors/harness/clutch sensor, etc..like raptor mentioned -shifter cables -shifter base -center console -pedal assembly Thats all the stuff that has to be 'swapped' or replace I can remember off the top of my head. Its not an easy task, or a quick one. Good luck. |
Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
Mike if you dont mind, What was the total damage (in $s) for doing a AT to MT swap parts included. I would like to get this done in the next couple weeks but i would like something to reference price wise.

Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
I believe Mike did it for free since he likes DJ's perty mouth so much. Maybe I'm wrong, but we all know DJ is broke and Mike is lonely!

Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
I didn't think DJ was that good, so he only got the discounted rate. And he had to supply the parts car. There might have been another stipulation that included the tumbler as well but I could be wrong. ;)
Tom, your probably best off getting a parts car and estimating 2-4k in parts and labor. |
Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
If that were to happen again here, it would be around 2000-2500 in labor(1G). DJ got a really good deal, not for the reasons you fucktards mentioned. I would never do it for the same rate again. The cheapest way to do it is for sure to pick up a parts car, at least then, you could sell some of the stuff you didn't use to offset some of the labor costs as well.
AJ is the perv who likes the tumbler, he mentioned several times that he would fit inside it. Don't know if he tried it or not, don't really want to know. |
Re: 1G Auto to Manual Swap
Thanks, Hopefully i can get the setup and have it done within 3-4 weeks
