2.4L Pistons
Hi. I have a 6 bolt 2.4L, and I've been researching pistons. Ones that caught my eye were from Magnus Motorsports. Black anodized, high boost, alcohol, etc. Anyone know anything about these?

Because I'm a dumbass who knows nothing. Thanks for all your help.

Decent and cheap, go for Wiseco. If you want better, go for Arias or Ross, but they are not quite as streetable (more slap). JE just sucks, stay away from them, IMO.
|
I was set on Wiseco until I read something Raptor said about Wiseco sucking for an undisclosed reason. Thankyou Jet, for some real advice. A little piston purr never hurt anyone!
|
The reason Wisecos are not the greatest any more is that they started making them with the part #s and a makr to show how they should go in the engine stamped on the top of the pistons instead of being nice and smooth. Not the best way to start off with a new set of pistons on a boosted engine.

Re: 2.4L Pistons
Allan is right, at least about why I didn't want to use the wisecos as shipped anymore. What really pissed me off was their lousy attitude about getting ones that didn't have extra indents all over the top. They said I would have to order custom sets and wait 4-5 weeks as well as spend another 150-200 per set for them to leave the stupid marks off. And they were pretty crappy to talk to.
There are a huge number of pistons on the market that work well. I will tell you which ones I don't like. Besides the wisecos, I am not a fan of Ross or as Jet mentioned the JE's. There are many reasons for me not liking either from the things they lack to problems they have. Venolia, CP, Arias etc are all fine and will work with you on custom setups. We are switching to a piston manufacturer that at the moment I will not disclose to anyone other than our customers or potential customers. The design is much better and on every engine tested, they have been proven to add substantial power gains. If you are considering having us build your engine, call or come down and I will run through the facts and info for you. |
Re: 2.4L Pistons
The pistons that Magnus sells are made by Ross to their custom specs.
How do these pistons add substantial power? What is substantial power? |
Re: 2.4L Pistons
For only a piston switch, substantial power in this case is 20HP at the crank. Accounted for by dome and ring land and skirt design. This has been proven on an engine dyno over and over. The pistons replaced were all wisecos in this case.

Re: 2.4L Pistons
Dome? We don't use domes.
|
Re: 2.4L Pistons
Not a dome, I mis typed, the crown. Use Coates valves and you could use a dome ;)
|
Re: 2.4L Pistons
Domes suck for detonation resistance though anyways.
|
Re: 2.4L Pistons
I was kidding on that of course. DSMers can't afford Coates setups anyway. Hey, don't you have a few more games to dominate or something?
|
Re: 2.4L Pistons
I'd be interested in seeing dyno sheets of this 20hp difference myself. Please tell me this aren't Endyn rollerwaves.

Re: 2.4L Pistons
Oh not even close. I will see what I can do to get the dyno sheets. It may not be too difficult. It is from someone I trust and they have no reason to exagerate this. Much of the power increase comes from the lack of ring friction. They don't require latteral gas porting and still are able to run very light tension rings with good seal. The shop in question tests the motors the same way I do(in addition to the dyno testing), with a torque meter after bare crank install and after each piston install which shows the amount of torque required to rotate the assembly. With these pistons/rings, the torque required was cut to less than half. I have noticed definate differences between different ring materials even on the same piston. EG the chrome rings VS plasma molly on the Wisecos, final rotating torque requirement was decreased by almost 50 inch lbs (a little more than 4 ft lbs) exactly on the 3 engines that wiseco decided to send the pistons with the chromes. (another reason I don't like wiseco - if you don't specifically ask, you never know what rings will end up in the box)
Maybe your butt dyno won't be able to tell, but at the track, I will take every advantage I can. If it is 2HP, so be it, 20, better yet. It all adds up. I will see what I can do to score the dyno sheets. If you want more detail, call me. I don't believe internet hype any more than anyone else, All of my research always includes a million questions to engineers, as many references from sources I trust as well as a ton of testing. In this case, a ton of testing has been done (by other than the piston manufacturer) by a source I have complete faith in and I will still do my own testing. |
Re: 2.4L Pistons
I'm stopping by QPR.

Re: 2.4L Pistons
I wanted to mention something else now that I think about it. The Wisecos are decent other than the divits in the top and part numbers, the machining is very accurate and the price is decent. The Divits and their customer service is why I no longer use them. For the customers of the 20 engines we have used Wisecos in this year, there good pistons, the divit thing is a new addition they just started doing recently. The fact that the new pistons we are going to are a better design is one of the main reasons we are switching.
