Idle Surge

My car has an idle surging problem and I was wondering if anybody else has had the same. It doesn't like to start up very easily after it is parked for a while, it's running excessivly rich, and it seems to have lost some power. I've had a few people tell me it's a boost leak and others tell me it's the TPS, (Throttle Position Sensor) which isn't cheap. Any help and/or info would be much appreciated.

Idle surge really wont make your car run rich or hard to start I dont think. Should just be up and down between 100-1200 rpm over and over. Or just when its cold. If it does it when its cold and then goes away its your Fast Idle air valve (FIAV). If it does it all the time its your ISC.

Power loss is something else.

My car has the same problem. I have been looking into it and it also could be your mass air flow sensor. Sometimes, when they start to get shitty, they do not work properly in the cold. Does your car get better after it warms up? Why do you assume its running rich?

I am with Gixxer, kill the FIAV and ISC.

It could be the TPS, if it is broken or adjusted wrong. It could also be boost leaks. When the fuel injector insulators get old, they get hard and leak very easy. And boost/vacuum leak after the throtle plate can cause idle surge issues.

Shane of course is right, there are a number of possible causes for the idle surge, all of which should be checked. And honestly every DSMer should check for boost leaks if there is a question. My above answer has something to do with the fact that I have about 40 really nice blue FIAV & ISC blockoffs in stock ;)

Thanx for all the info everybody. I'm gonna check over all my vaccum lines and other stuff. Hopefully I'll find the problem.

My car also dies at start up if I let it sit for a while. If you find out whats wrong, let me know. I just step on the gas lightly and wait like 30 seconds or so and then its back to normal.

My old eclipse would surge when it was cold and run better after it was warm. It ran very rich as well....my problem was the 02 sensor was completely dead.
