Partition magic expirence??
 

Does anyone have expirence using Partition magic, today i used it and created a partition that i could backup some files so i could reformat my computer and when i restarted the computer to finish the setup of the partition the computer froze at around 10% of being complete, so i turned the computer off and when it started to come back up winblows xp would keep restarting my computer when the startup screen would come on, so im thinking oh great my xp is fucked. so i put in the xp cd to reinstall it or to make sure the partition is still there, and sure enough its not seeing my original partition, and my 120 gb hard drive is only showing 35 gb of space which is the space that i had allocated to the new partition. Does anyone know how to bring that partition back and maybe get some of the files back that were on it namely one file that was a .rar or .zip file that had all my backed up items such as pictures and movies?????
I really need this back so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know from expereince if this would work, but can you reboot from the Partition Magic disc and see what it picks up on?

it wont pick up anything, i ended up installing windows on the partition that was there so thats how im typing this, and right now im usnign activ undelete to do a low level scan for partitions to see if i can recover it, it did find a deleted partition but we will have to see what i can do with it

Did you ever try using FDISK? It never hurts to fall back on tried and true methods. If you're ever having partition issues always fall back on resetting the MBR.

Did you use the "allocate after" option when you were making that partition. Partition Magic software works usually well, but if you make a single mistake during the setup it may screw your MBR.

i may be wrong here but wouldnt fdisk make it harder to find that partition.
The real shitty thing is that windows is only seeing 38 gigs, and i installed partition magic again so see if that would see it but it looks like thats not either. and the active Undelete software that i got is 50% done and it only found the partition that i deleted in the windows setup so that i could see if it would read the remaining space. so i dont think its gonna see the remainder. anyone know how much space 66,043,215 sectors would be?
Earlier i was just gonna say fuck it and install linux but that was gonna take forever for debians 6-7 .iso files to download. so i ditched that idea for now. not to mencion that i would lose that big backup .rar file that i absolutly do not want to lose becase of all the pictures that are on that. it was a 20 gig file that i was gonna use the extra partition to hold it.
Sorry if im rambleing on but im just so pissed at my computer and the virus it had.

ok the active undelete didnt see it so looks like i need a different way of getting that file, im currently downloading debian linux for after i find this file, but for now i just need a way to get the file, any ideas?

Partition magic is great.....unless it crashes during the middle! You are probably going to have to reformat and start over. I always close everything down (including things running in the background) before I do anything with partition magic.

I can agree with Jet, you may have to start over. A few weeks back, At work here i had a pc with windows xp that would continuously reboot itself. Coudn't get into safe mode, couldn't do last known good config, etc.. no matter what, the status bar on the buttom(when starting up), would get so far and then it would just reboot itself.

I ended up reformatting and putting xp back on. I actually used Norton Ghost and put an image that was close, back on it. Saved tons of time.

Unless you have data on there that is extremely critical, sometimes its faster just to start over.

You done fuct up! I just like to buy a new hard drive, that usually works pretty good.

last night i was messing around and was able to make the cmos see the remaining portion of the hard drive, i then installed windows xp again and it was also able to see the 120gigs i left the partition as ntfs and did not format it, so if there was any files that could be saved maybe this would make it easier. but when i reinstalled xp and it finished the install then i looked to see if the files were there and they werent. SO i installed Active Undelete to search for any deleted partitions, and last night i believe it saw one so ill have to check it out and see if i can recover the file, keep your fingers crossed.
