awd drifting?

have any of you drifted in your awd dsm? i guess you could say im not that into drag. and wondering if the dsm could drift because i think drifting is pretty cool. becuase i do want a awd dsm but if drifting wont work with it might get a 240sx. so can awd drifting be done?

HondaKiller 11-27-2004 05:27 PM

I drift in the snow with my talon and mountaineer, but I don't push enough power to drift on dry pavement without the e-brake.

SquackDiddy 11-27-2004 07:58 PM

i see. so pretty hard then.

CVD 11-27-2004 08:05 PM

No.

That is all.

SpicyOrange 11-27-2004 08:55 PM

What is the goal in drifting??? I don't understand it?

JET 11-27-2004 08:55 PM

Yeah, you can definately drift an AWD. It won't usually step out quite as far as a RWD, but you can also pull it back in easier if you get too far gone. It is a little harder to get it to step out too because the power is split between the tires, but it is not terribly difficult.

Goat Blower 11-27-2004 09:10 PM

Yup, it can be done. We watched a AWD Skyline drifting out at SEMA, it made some hellacious noises but drifted real well. And I used to drift mine in the winter all the time, it's easier to control than a RWD.

Didnt you drift at the 1/4 mile track too.

I tried drifting my Talon at an AARRF track day a couple of years ago. I ended up running off the track, couldn't get it to drift and then snapped my driveshaft going for an all wheel burnout. I did drift it a little yesterday when I took her out for the last time of the season.

All wheel Skylines have adjustable diffs to make them a much more RWD (90/10) car than a standard AWD. I saw it last year at SEMA and it was pretty cool.

I have done some drifting going down on-ramps before. Nothing too huge, but stepping it out a couple of feet. You would need your suspension set up to do it, but it should work pretty good. A welded VC would help too.

scheides 11-28-2004 04:51 PM

~300whp, a welded VC and some serious swaybars will do it like crazy:
-power: breaks the tires loose
-VC: puts more power to the rear wheels
-swaybars, upgraded in the front specifically will help the car tuck in when turning hard.

SquackDiddy 11-28-2004 05:16 PM

i see. yeah i like a dsm better then a 240 anyways. where are drifting/autox events held in the midwest/minnesota? 300whp is easy with a dsm. would welding the vc be bad for reliabilaty? and the swaybars can be on.

Shane@DBPerformance 11-28-2004 05:56 PM

You might need to run 4 spare tires to keep all 4 broken loose on an AWD. DSMs run a 50/50 split with a stock or welded VC. People run welded VCs for dynoing or in hopes of saving the center diff from breaking. Running a welded VC, welded center diff or spool will be hard on your CV joints. They will probably start clicking after a few months.

scheides 11-28-2004 08:11 PM

Actually, won't welding the VC also make the tires hop/chirp when turning when driving normally?

Alpine TSi 11-28-2004 10:00 PM

Very much so, I couldn't stand driving around with a welded VC in. The car would also slow down much faster in parking lot turns. I had to really get going faster than I wanted to just to keep going at slow speeds while turning.

I only use my welded VC when I want to dyno, otherwise it stays on my shelf.

SquackDiddy 11-28-2004 10:35 PM

so what is a vc? : D

JET 11-28-2004 10:50 PM

It's the viscous coupler, it splits the power between the front and back wheels. I suggest going to VFAQ.com and checking out the 1000 answered questions and newbie FAQ. That will get you much more familiar with your car.
