Quick Question / Porting?
This maybe stupid but...
If you have a ported turbo and use a non-ported o2 housing, are there any bad side effects? TIA Mukapah **admin edit - please start using more desriptive descriptions ** |
no bad sidefects, its just a bit more heat held back in the turbo..
and less boost up higher rpms' reasons of porting is to get more boost up top, but you do loose some velocity in the lower rpm's i beleive.. -E |
The reason for porting is to get better flow, mainly. Better flow = less pumping losses = HP! Porting will also help spool up some and can cure boost creep.
No, running an unported O2 won't hurt, you just don't get the full benefit from the other ported parts and bigger exhaust. |
The reason I asked was b/c just put on a used ported FPb28 w/upgrade actuator, but manifold and o2 are stock. After running up and down the street, I cannot get any boost above 10psi at any rpm. Pull back into the garage, pop up the hood, and the manifold is just extremely hot, smoking if you will. Oil leaks from gasket on oil return line. I'm thinking to myself, wtf, do i have a whacked up turbo? or wtf is going on? Any advice guys?

That is not the O2 housing causing that... Could be the actuator, your boost controller, and I would fix the oild leak before you drive too much.

You probably don't have the boost controller hooked up right or something. 10 psi is right for the stock actuator. Is spool up ok?

Full boost @ a hair over 3k rpm?
Ok, took everything off, put everything back on. Adjusted the actuator 3 turns out so it has a little play, before I had tightened it so that it just sat over the rod with the gate tightly closed. Boost controller is a Profec-A set @ 1 bar, fuzzy tech indeed. Will drive it in a bit, tired.
Correct me if I'm wrong, if the wastegate spring is set @ 17psi, wouldn't that mean that the turbo would spool, build boost, until the wastegate spring is over come and open the gate? Odd, that before it didn't build much boost. Will update... Edited: It does not spool up like the stock t25... that's why i'm worried that I got a busted b28... Updated: It's been ok (I think). Fuel cut? (BOOM Anything fall from the car?!) 3 times now, ouch! Scared to punch it now! The weird thing is, based on *web readings* I thought this turbo is supposed to get full boost @ ~3k Rpm... I'm not getting it until about 4k or so...it's as if the FPB28 does not want to spool...is this normal? anyone? |

Did you drop anything down in the exhaust that would plug it up? Do you still have a cat on there?

I'm 99.9% positive that I didn't drop anything in the exhaust. I took off the DP before I took off the t25 and put it back on after the fpb28. Crap... hrm...

Fuel cut is probly from boost leaks. I do not buy into the spool ratings most of the time. Turbos spool a bit different depending on what gear you are in. First generally takes longer than 5th gear.

4k full spool aint bad, dont believe everything you read. Id be willing to bet that you have air leaks. Also, if your at 17psi on stock fuel setup.. thats weak sauce. Id just turn it down and bit and you might be able to avoid the fuel cut. I got fuel cut cuz i had an open vacuum and it was boosting to no end heh, got everything either used or pluged?

Hrm... there's an open nipple on the Injen intake, I will get a cap for that. I've checked and double check intake leaks from the turbo inlet @ 25psi, and it's solid. Yeah, I'm still on the stock fuel system, so I understand the *why's* concerning fuel cut. I'll stick the regular actuator back on and see what happens. Maybe at lower boost levels (15psi) it will respond like advertised. Will update.

Having the nipple open is letting in unmetered air leading you to fuel cut. Anywhere that air is let into the system after the MAS is unmetered. Therefor your ecu does not see it as airflow and you fuel cut. You do not have to have a boost leak to fuel cut as long as the opening is infront of the turbo (intake pipe). I am hoping that you are not on stock injectors as the turbo will not spool below 17psi. You will have to use your foot on the gas pedal to control the boost. Not a very good idea as far as performance is concerned. Stick the stock actuator on and see if it helps. Plug the nipple for sure though.

I didn't get the chance to change the actuator back to the stock 12psi one yet. Busy and all. I did cap the nipple. But have not taken the car to wot. However, I was reading something on "tuners" about exhaust leak. Is it true that if you have an e.manifold or o2 housing leak/crack it will smell really, really bad? Cuz it does. I re-used the 7cm manifold/turbo gasket that came with the turbo. I figured it would be ok, but everywhere I read info, its reccommended to use a new one. Not sure if this also contributes to my problem. Have to get a new one, any shops here have these in stock?

An exhaust manifold leak will have nothing to do with fuel cut at all. The only thing that would do is cause a noise or possibly burn stuff if it is right by it (radiator fans).

To get a decent benifit out of either side of two ported items, they both kind of need to be ported. Its just moving the bottleneck farther down the line. It couldnt really be bad but just get a ported housing.

Just a FYI: I had the FP 28 myself and it never seemed like it spooled very good. Turned out it was simply boost creep. I had the boost controlled turned all the way out and it just kept going. After JET ported the O2, I have had no problems with controlling boost. Might be somthing you could check out if the problem persists.
