j/k

Now that I have your attention, I have a question.

How hard is it to turbo a car that is naturally aspirated from the factory? (Such as a five liter mustang). I'm trying to decide whether to fork the money for new heads or whether to try a turbo setup instead. Also, would it be better for me to go single or twin?

Thanks

Single is cheaper. The hardest parts about turboing an NA car is usually making a manifold/header to hold the turbo(s) and doing something about the fueling.

Why not just get a supercharger instead? It'll be easier, but not as fun IMO....haha. Yeah, I think it would cost ALOT of money if you want to go TT...but it would be really cool...

Enes 10-19-2004 03:14 PM

honestly, best thing would be to get one of the superchargers that replaces your intake manifold, but its not intercooled then.

Or get one of those that look like a huge alternator, then you intercool it and you are better off that way.. ..

Turbo's are nicer, but $$$ is way way too much..

Id go with a Vortech SUper.
Lot easier and cheaper.
Can be just as fast.

Fuel won't be a problem. Superchargers are nice, but expensive and not as easy to work with. The thing I like about turbos is that you can change your boost so easily, plus theyre more efficient. I guess I was kinda thinking of putting together my own budget turbo setup, so it would probably have to be two cheaper turbos.

Enes, the superchargers youre talking about are called roots-style blowers. They create a ton of immediate torque, but don't make a very well top-end (which is what I'm looking for).

Thanks for the replies all, keep em comin :D

Enes 10-19-2004 03:21 PM

sell the v8 and buy a 4g63 and stick it in there!!!

Shane@DBPerformance 10-19-2004 03:22 PM

If you want instant torque get a roots style and have not much topend. If you want power lag and a powerband that looks like a VTEC Honda then get a centrifugal supercharger. If you want something better than those 2 options, doa turbo.

I'd go smaller twins on that setup.
I always tend to choose efficent over cheap though.
You could always buy the heads and continue to spray on them, and then sell them later when you have a 'kit' put together.

You'll need good flowiing heads when you go turbo so I'd get the heads first then peice a turbo setup together.

It has two banks, use two turbos. I don't look at things in a whats cheaper theory, more of whats best. Set your goal and bring your budget to it otherwise you will be bummed with the compromise in the end. My thoughts are of course are opinion, and they vary of course. I am giving advice based on what I would do in the same situation for what thats worth.

You could do a big single. A lot of 5.0 mustang guys that run fast times have gone turbo. Are you on the stock bottom end? Port your stock heads, and throw a "turbo" cam in. What are the specs on your current cam?

Also, as far as picking out a cam goes. It seems that 114 lsa works well with most turbo setups. You need to figure out what kinda setup you wanna run before you can pick out a "perfect" cam. If you do twin-turbo, will you be using a log or an equal length manifold, ect ect.

Also, it's not good to have a lot of overlap on a turbo cam, and people generally run more intake duration then exhaust, like you would on a NA/Supercharged/N20 cam.

That's a good link. Look at the specs on each cam. Their turbo cams have no overlap at all.

just give QPR your credit card and tell mike to do up a twin turbo setup. you should have your car back by next summer. with the sweatest setup ever

Yah, someone needs to take down Jake.

workin on it ;).
It would be at the track of course.

BACK on topic.

Honestly, 'RedStal95', if you want to stop by and talk about possible setups with different budgets, we'd be more than welcome to look at options for you.
I just think singles are a waste on v applications. Yes they are easy to tune, yes it is cheaper, but in the end I still believe twins can make more power in a more efficient environment.

A single would be better, but twins would be easier and probably cheaper. You can probably modify a set of shorty headers to use and throw something like a set of 16G's on there. Plenty of power for not much dough. Hope you're good with a TIG.

I think the 5.0 would murder a pair of 16G's in short order. Depends on the RPM range though. What can we rev this thing to?

I just wanted to post.... You guys know way too much for your own goods.

When was the last time any of you were out to get a drink? We should all get together and get a drink....

You guys know entirely way too much. :bounce:

Have a good day.
