I just aquired a new computer today so I don't have to lug my laptop every where. My problem is I want to be able to transfer all of my files and hopefully progams between the two.

Here are the basic stats

Old computer - Sony Vaio Laptop PCG-XG28
- DVD Drive
-external burner
-window 98 with all updates

New computer - Dell Latitude
-DVD Drive
-can probably install external burner
-windows 2000 nt

Both have infrared ports so I was hoping to just line them up, but I couldn't get it to work. I am thinking that I could just put everything onto a disk and transfer it but I don't know if I can do this with programs.

Is there anyway I can set these up to be able to access each other from different places. Like send a print to work from home or such?
The main programs I want to transfer is Office 2000, ACT 2000. This Dell doesn't ahve a thing on it at all.

If there is a way I can plug a cable between them it would be ideal. Also how hard would it be to network them so I could plug one in and it would be able to access the printers and scanner and internet without having to swap all of the wires?

I know this is a lot but any help would be appreciated.

A shared network is not that hard to set up. Do you have Cable? or DSL? get a router and hook all the computers into it and set up each computer to chare with each other and you should be able to connect through the network.

Also I would just burn the data onto a cd and just copy it onto the new computer.

As for documents from progrms like ACT you will need the same programs that the original computer has to make it work on the new computer.... (at work you might have ACT, so Youll need Act at home and then you can just email documents to yourself and look use them that way.

You should have office on both so just swap files as you would with any machine for those files.

The only problem is I have hacker copys of most programs and I work for myself. I have dsl at the shop, but only dial up at home. Has anyone used those boxes they say let you use the phone/fax/inet all at the same time know if they work? And will they let you leave a computer up on dial up all day? I don't really know if I need it but I would like to try and have it.

Cant you just setup a network between the new computers (ethernet cards)? Your copied software will still work on the other computer if you still remember the passwords. I would send the files via email if you want to transfer things while you are at work.

fuck the router, go get a crossover cable, hook em up and transfer your heart away.

That would work too I was just thinking if he had Cable already he wouldnt have to buy anything else... besides a router, and he could hook multiple connections in at once...
