One day i get bored and decide to rebuild my trannsmission cause.... well i just felt like it. Ive never had experiece with them but what the hell, i need to learn some how. So i get the tranny out, everything goes good..... new gears, seals, the works. All back together, shift into first and it goes good. Shift into reverse... and nothing. :headache: I ended up with one washer but everything else went back in. Any help as to why it wont go into reverse but into all other gears?

LOL yeah, same issue here once..

there were two little balls that fit inside the rails/forks make sure they are still there..

but i'd wait on that untill somone else here with more trany experience pops in and says something about it

Thanx for your help, im pretty sure that they are they because they fell out once and i put them back in. :)

Looking at some pics i think i mixed the 2 syncros (those are the brass looking things right? lol) on backwards. The ones when you first take the case off.... by the reverse. I see that there is one syncro with teeth that go all the way around, and one that has 3 cut outs. So... would switching the 2 have anything to do with it not going in 5th? or does it not matter?

The one with 3 sets of teeth goes on the outside and a wave spring holds it away from the end case. You need to have the passenger side of the car jacked up to get it to stay on while you're putting on the end case.

its not the syncros because i had them on right the first time :headache: . This sux, but at least all 5 forward gears go in with ease :bounce: . I have to take it all apart and check the reverse gear and shaft to see if i put them in right. what a headache this is. Ill let you guyz know how it turnz out.

Practice makes perfect.

If it shifts into reverse and doesnt actually back up, its possible that you messed up the idler gear install. Just a thought.

Wizard50369 10-06-2004 03:16 AM

Thats what i was thinking so i took it back out again today and put it back together (seemed to work up until i put it back in the car!) What is the "right" way to put the idler gear in? does it have to go in after the other gears or does it not matter? Third time ive done this :bs:

Wizard50369 10-16-2004 07:26 PM

Ok so i take out the tranny again. check over my work and notice things that i had done "wrong". I put it back together, making sure with each step that the gears rotated and shifted. I checked all the way until i put the final cover on the tranny, but didnt check after that. So i put it all back in the car, start it, let go of the clutch and it lurches forward and dies. In Neutral!! Now i have what i think is second gear as Neutral and no other gears. :headache: :headache: :headache: This is so much fun!

ever get that fixed? lol

slowbubblecar 10-24-2004 09:29 PM

how hard was it to do the rebuild? 1-10, tem as really hard. Is there some where you read how to do it?

Wizard50369 11-04-2004 01:53 AM

Never did get it fixed, supposed to take it in tomorrow hopefully :). On a scale from 1-10 i would like to say it was 5 but since i couldnt get it fixed i cant really say that. lol. Its easy if you remember where the pieces go. Take lots of pics and you should be fine. I didnt read about it till after i got it apart, than i noticed there is a section on the VFAQs.

Wizard50369 11-04-2004 01:55 AM

Anyone want to sell me a transmission? LOL. The shops want $350 for "bench work". whatever that means. but i saw someone selling one for $250.

1slowdsm 11-16-2004 02:57 PM

Anyone have an extra one after they sell it to Wizard first? I'm thinking about rebuilding mines, but I dont have the slightest clue on how and plus I dont have tools worth anything at my house...can barely find jack and cant find a wrench...hahaha
