Okay two guys from my work say that I have a Front Differential because its an all-wheel drive. I've told them its a Transfer Case, but they keep saying that only 4-wheel drive cars have transfer cases. I have a 92 Talon TSI AWD and its me against them two. They've been working there A LOT longer than I have, so they know more. But its IS a transfer case that I have on my car, right? It even says that in the books we have at work and they still wont believe me. Doesnt a Front Diff. look like a rear diff.? Even with all the facts I have, they still say I have a front diff. By the way, does the WRX have a transfer case also...because its a small car and its an awd?

The front diff is inside the tranny.The transfer case mounts to the tranny.All driven wheels need a differential of some sort, otherwise your car would handle like ass and the tires would wear very quickly.If more than 2 wheels are driven, then a transfer case is needed as well.

Thanks...thats all I needed to know. I never knew the Front Diff. was inside the tranny....thats something new that I've learned about my car. Now I can get this straight with my co-workers... :lol:

Leave him alone. You all know that the front diff is on the outside of all other car manufactures trannies. He must be used to working on Hondas or sumthin.

P.S. Don't forget to tell them that your flux capasitor is also located in the tranny and is a sealed unit that doesn't need the fluid changes like the other manufactures who use external front diffs.

all other manufacturers? i'm sure you could find a car that has the front diff in the transmission and has all wheel drive. i can';t name one cause i don't know, but i bet it's out there.


ANYway, not like that really matters, cause the only fast cars are rear wheel drive! ;)

Yeah, with three differentials and a xfer case, tracking down a problem related to them is a real bitch. Ask me how I know. :headache:

most AWD cars are like a DSM drivetrain. the front differential is usually always inside the transmisssion. also, there may be a center differential, but not always.
the "transfer case" is acually just an angle gear.
on a truck or SUV type 4WD system the transfer case is more like a center differential, that will also let you change from rwd to 4wd and also change gear ratio's. The external differential is mainly due to the engine layout. there is quite a ways between the output of the trans and the front wheels in the eypical RWD layout.
In a transverse layout the trans outputs are going right to the wheels anyways, thus taking away the need for a front driveshaft and external diff.

i have yet to see a transverse mounted engine with a AWD drivetrain that has a external front differential, but i am pretty dumb and inexperienced, so that doesnt mean much

NOT TRUE. The Flux Capacitor is usually fit inside the cabin, thankfully it has a radiation blocker because the 1.7 gigawatts of power can produce my balls to glow green and shit, i know i wouldnt want my flux capacitor leaking and causing me to be sterile, i want my boys to swim.
