will a 90 awd trnny fit on 94 awd eclipse? i have heard people say yes and say no

Goat Blower 11-11-2003 12:05 PM

Physically it will. But the shift cables, shifter assy, cable mounts and actuator rods are all different on the 90 versus the 91-94. It will work, it just takes some adjusting and messing around. When I swapped a 92 tranny into a 90, I ended up removing the rubber bushing on the shifter assy to get more throw and adjusted the cables accordingly, it worked just fine. Putting a 90 tranny into a 92 should simply get you a shorter throw, which is good.

are the splines different into the transfer case?

john 11-11-2003 12:44 PM

Someonr can correct me if I am wrong but I think 90's are different than the 91-94. I was told that I could swap in any tranny other that a 90 into my 92 because 90's have a different spline count.

At-Least-It's-An-Evo 11-11-2003 12:58 PM

90s have 22 spline output shaft and xfer case, the 91-94 have a 23 splinecount output shaft. That is the only difference fitment-wise other than the cables being a little different and taht the throw is off a little, but adjusting the cables can somewhat help that.

Actually the split is 91.5. Some 91's also have the 22 spline shaft. With a 91 you need to check.

Can some one posy up all the info on the Diff Trannys thorugh the years and send it to me. I will put a sticky up on it in the good stuff forum. It's would be handy to have.

I dont think it was a year thing because my 91 is a early 91 and mine's a 23 spline and the ONLY 91 I've seen w/ a stock 22 spline case is Momin's(elite) Eclipse GSX.

JET 11-11-2003 07:07 PM

I was just trying to say it was a mid model year thing. Some 91's had a 22 spline shaft and some had a 23 spline, so you need to check any 91 to make sure. Is that better?

I'm running a 91 22 spline in my 90 right now.

Some 91's are, some are not

Yes, all you'd need to make it work is a 22 spline xfer casebut I'd try to stay away from 90 trannys period if you plan on upgrading that one to a race tranny ever. I'd try to find a 91-94/23 spline and get a 90 as a last resort. I believe it's something to do with some intermediate shaft inside, but I'm not an expert, as it's like another coupla hundred of dollars to get that upgraded when building it. Having the cables would make things shift nicer also. I had a 22 spline tranny in my car w/ the 91 cables and it didnt shift too great (some grinding) no matter how I adjusted it; and it was a decent tranny in the car I got it from.

just my .02

Trannys suck, just build ONE good one if you can.
I've finally learned that after .... 6 "good" used trannys... :razz2:

lol, this is true, many a dsmer has had 'good' tranies multiple times.

john 11-12-2003 08:49 PM

Yeah, my tranny is going to get rebuilt hopefully this winter. Not sure weather I will have shindley do it or QPR.

Goat Blower 11-13-2003 09:54 AM

If you use the 90 tranny and don't want to get a 22 spline xfer case, you can simply swap a 23 spline output shaft into the tranny. It's only held in with a spring clip on the viscous coupling. Pop those off and swap the shaft.

The 90 style tranny was built up to June of 90, if your car has a build date after that, you've got the 23 spline 91+ model.
