1/2 filled block Vs refresh?
So pretty sure I have a pin size hole in my headgasket. So while I'm in there since I have been on this kick about maintenance first.
I was going to have the motor completely gone through. Who woud you recommend and what cost should I be expecting? Mind you in just did a timing belt, water pump, tensioners, all new belts last year (like 1000 miles or less) Also there is a 1/2 filled built 6 bolt block that's at John wigger's that's for sale with 500 miles on it. The guy who's selling it actually lIves next town over from me (5min) even though John is 3hrs away. What are your thoughts on going that route instead. Some of you on ecmlink.com will have seen the thread on this block or here is his craigslist.com ad http://columbia.craigslist.org/pts/5971554649.html Keep in mind I've been DD my car almost year round. And it is meant for road race (once and a while) not drag so I doubt 1/2 filled will be the way end up going. Just seemed so cheap for a built motor (maybe a spare if I give up on the road race deal) but I don't know much about "FILLED" blocks. |
Re: 1/2 filled block Vs refresh?
I wouldn't go with a filled block for anything but a 800whp+ drag car.
You've already got the split-thrust block, mod it up with pistons and rods, or simply hone and re-ring if going budget route. |
Re: 1/2 filled block Vs refresh?
I have a "built" 6 bolt block already in the car. Almost identical to my last cars motor. I have never had a motor gone through however and don't see a cost price for refreshing. (In my head I imagine it's something like, headgasket, new ARP studs, new bearings, valve stem seals, gaskets through out, plus what ever machine work etc)
Or do I just say screw it and hope for the best and just replace the head gasket? I just figure if I'm going in anyways might as well do some work whIle the motors being worked on. |
Re: 1/2 filled block Vs refresh?
Do a compression and leak down test to see if there's any need. My refreshes consisted of a bottle hone, new rings, bearings and seals. I've done this once to the 2.4 in my car that I built in 2003, still has perfect compression and leak down.

Don't fill it. I ran 8's on a full wet block with my1g with a 2.3l.
