Project Trailer - Transport and comfort

Well I needed a more secure way to get my race only Kawasaki to events, so this spring's project is to buy an enclosed trailer. (I also have a pit bike that I made with a full frame up restoration/modification that may get its own thread already done this spring).

So I decided I need to gather some money.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...44&oe=5797E51E

In looking at Craigslist and determining the best course of action I decided to buy a 6x12x6' high used enclosed trailer. I found a decent price on one in Spooner, WI. So last Wednesday, March 16th, and decided to pull the trigger after some over the phone wheeling and dealing.

When I got there the trailer lights didn't work very well and I actually had a blown fuse on my truck at the same time due to borrowing another trailer for IMS with a bad taillight, so figuring out both of those was fun.
Here are two pictures I took when I was driving home that night.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...56&oe=5797F9E7
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...10&oe=5788B15E
So I made a list and bought some stuff:
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...33&oe=578EEFD2
Upon trailer inspection I came up with a list of items required:
  • Sagging floor repaired
To combat this idea I decided to install a 3/8" subflooring over the existing
Old Floor:
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...8a&oe=57526FE6
New floor progress pictures.
First piece cut to size, before glue.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...3d&oe=574C3B6A
Board installed
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...06&oe=57500C81
2nd front board cut and glue, before install
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...fd&oe=5796E136
Almost done, didn't take one of the final product yet
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...2d&oe=578856F4
  • Electrical system in trailer fixed due to vampire taps, incorrect wire routing, and burned out lights.
New LED tail lights and side lights, and replacing a fender light system fixed the lighting. All new electrical wiring in the trailer fixed the vampire tap issue
So I started to rip out wiring, this is only the tail lights, notice all the vampire taps/wire taps. I think I counted 30 throughout the trailer in total.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...62&oe=577F1A22
Another example of a customization, 2 110V outlets on the floor, non weatherproof box, with "custom cord" with an illegal 110v male plug for extension cord install.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...99&oe=5754AF7A
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...6b&oe=578037EA
Stripped all the wire out and ran new stuff.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...0a&oe=574D1F51
I also swapped in a 7 pin connector
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...08&oe=577E7967

So now the wiring is completed. I also added a backup camera.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...0f&oe=577CEF27
Truck side 7" color monitor setup and ready for plug and play
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...43&oe=5798E375
Testing where to put the rear camera, ended up in this general direction.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...34&oe=578F51B7
And yes, everything is soldered and heat shrinked.
https://scontent-ord1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...a1&oe=5781143B

So the Camera is installed and functions perfectly. Bluetooth wireless and the 7" monitor will just stick on my truck dash, I can peel off the sticky tape/mount when it is time to trade it in.

Remaining stuff:
  • Seal drip edges on outside of trailer and seal up patch panels to cover holes due to removing ladder rack
  • Install Insulation
  • Re-panel interior
  • Install floor cover (marine grade carpet probably)
  • Front shelf install and cabinet construction
  • wheel chock and bike placement
  • install rest of gear
  • Fix rear trailer hinge
  • Paint touch up and decal install

I've also made some videos and put them on FB, need to figure out how to share them.

More to come tonight.

Busy weekend.
Insulation complete
Walls painted
Trailer floor painted
Shelf system starting to come together
Wiring/Lights complete
Rot on rear of trailer fixed.

I just put the shelf in there quickly to triple check dimensions. I'll level it out here and screw it down shortly and then start to figure out where I am mounting motorcycles/run the 100v electrical plug-in for the generator.

Looks good! You should look into the Pitbull Trailer Restrain System. Makes loading a bike so simple and best part is no load on your suspension

I have, quite expensive for now, but something that is on the future wish list.

Few pictures of it loaded up for my trip to the dyno. I'll make those updates in the other thread.

2 are of at night loading up/nearly done. The one in the AM after the 4.5 hour drive. (notice the gear bag fell down, need a 2nd bungie cord, spare helmets worked so that's done, few tools fell of peg board, suit hanging in back fell, so I moved that to the front after a gas stop 1/2 way thru the trip).
I still need to:
create a place for my tool box (on the tail of trailer)
make some tweaks to the shelf setup (I may mount the metal pegboard on the wall and make the shelf a fold down on the side to reduce tongue weight)
Make a spot to hold the ez up
Make a spot to hold the folding table and my cot for sleeping
Few more shelving locations
110 plug in setup
Touch up/paint exterior in parts. I am thinking of running it no stickers to avoid anyone figuring out the goodies inside.

Future:
Install 12v battery setup
stereo system
Ceiling vent with fan
Interior door lock

Yeah I went with the rustoleum professional grade stuff and Behr anti slip grit and paint chips.

Of course, first time loading the bike was in the rain; nothing like a test.

Looks great! Id be careful with keeping it safe though, ive heard of too many peoples trailers getting stolen. Not sure what kind of security measures there are for trailers these days?

How was the behr anti slip stuff?
That was my only, but major gripe with the floor coating it was mega slippery when wet.

We used something like this on ours. Adds a little peace of mind:

Yea that is something ive looked into too, I just use a padlock on the top of my hitch now, but that could easily be broken off probably.
