Quiet High Flow Mufflers?
 

I've been lightly researching over the winter, and am curious if anyone has any info or experience with mufflers that flow well, but with less noise than a straight through?

I currently have two straight through 3.5" Magnaflow mufflers on the 1g, but I'd like much less noise. I'm willing to sacrifice a little HP, for example, if the car makes approx 575whp DJ now, a reduction down to 550whp DJ would be acceptable if the noise level was reduced.

Might sound like a ricer idea, but would you consider running some sort of dual exhaust? You could run twin 2.5" mufflers kind of like what I'm running on the bean, and you know how quiet it is.

Otherwise you could try something like a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. Obviously not going to flow like a straight through, but a lot of guys in San Diego ran them back when I lived near there. Since they're so strict on modding/emissions, it's what they did to keep the noise down, but still have something that flows ok.

I did some research on this last year and basically I came up with the fact that the larger diameter the muffler, the more noise suppressing material is in there. So even a 3" straight through muffler with a 6" diameter can will be much quieter than say a glass pack.

I'm looking for the same thing with my build this spring. I went back to a 3" system comprised of a Thermal cat back, but it's way too loud for what I want, so I'll be looking for a good quality mid muffler in addition to the rear muffler the Thermal comes with. Either way, with at least 3" piping and a good quality muffler, there really shouldn't be much restriction in it.

Just throwing this out there but electric cut outs? go from quiet to loud with a flip of a switch and not loose any power when you want to rip on it. But you proably want it quiet all the time? The hushpower muffler work pretty good from what o have heard. My budies dad tried them out on his nova. But now hes not running them anymore since he never drives the car on the street. You will neec 2 mufglers to quiet a 600hp car down.

I would do whatever it took to make it quiet. However I don't believe there is any space on the other side of a 1g awd(on the other side of the gas tank/trunk).

I'll look into that muffler and peoples reviews of the loudness etc.

Yeah, the car got quieter when I added the second muffler, as the second is now an oval and larger, but still way to loud for my tastes these days. I'm open to anything I can fit. One thing that has to change is the current 6" circle muffler by the center of the car has to be replaced by a glasspack or something of that size, as it rubs under WOT..

Considered it, but don't want to fiddle with anything. Just want it to be as quiet as possible all the time. I loved the sound(or lack thereof) of Fast Mark's old turbo cobra. It made nearly 1000whp and you barely heard it(relatively speaking) when doing pulls on the highway.

Go to 3"?

What about a magnaflow regular(oval) shaped muffler? I bought one a long ass time ago I only got to hear it on a camry but it was pretty quiet for 3"

When i got my talon the previous owner had cut the cat and muffler off the car and just welded some pipe in. It was loud.

Now im currently running a 2 1/2 inch downpipe with 3inch pipe after that to an off brand Ultra 3 in/out straight through muffler and its considerably quieter than before.

Search for it on Tooners, there was a couple of really good threads on there from a few years ago. The only good places for mufflers on a 1G are the cat area and the rear. You could always throw another glasspack on after the cat since they don't take up any room. Kind of like the factory resonators on most cars these days.

That would be a last resort, as my brain can't wrap itself around choking the setup.

I can't go that small.

I had two mufflers on my 3.5" system and it was still loud enough to set off alarms in every parking ramp I went to. :D

I think you will be fine with 3", Steve didn't you get to see the diff. first hand between 3" and 3.5"?

I think below 650-700 gains will be minimal and if you are willing to sacrifice well it might be the key.

Keep us updated, I'm in need of exhaust and I want it as quiet as stock.

What about offset magnaflow "straight"-through mufflers? I have an offset in, center out with a 3" system and it's very pleasant. Also, what about extending the tip beyond the edge of the bumper? I did that as well and the combination of that muffler and the protruding pipe made the car VERY nice to ride around in. I used to get fatigued from the droning, but now at highways speeds, I can use my "inside voice."

I had a resonator where the cat was, and then a hooker straight through muffler on my 1g and it was perfect, not too noisy, good sound.

Have you heard anything about vibrant 3" straight thru mufflers i think they are 14" long.

I should ask Shane about any data he may have between different cars with similar setups and 3 or 3.5 inch systems. I don't really want to replace my whole setup, but if it's the ticket, maybe that'w what will happen.

I'd be open to it if they help, that's kinda what I was looking for.. someone today "xxx" type of muffler is better that a typical straight through, which is what I have.

I'll have to see if I can test something a little extended and see if my current placement is an issue(it's as far as the muffler can sit back, but maybe I can add a tip or something)

Yeah, I have a full on 3.5" round straight through muffler where the cat was, and an oval at the rear currently.

I think we did one on Bman's talon, it was decent.


Seems most everyone who had an acceptable sound level were all running 3" systems. Maybe it's just as simple as I'm not going to be able to create a quiet 3.5" systems with the 1g's space constraints?

Now I'll have to figure out how much HP(spool/efficiency, etc?) I may lose and what mufflers to try if I want to build a 3" system.

When you first built it, it was a 3" vibrant resonator, then went to a 3" center in/offset out straight thru Hooker.
You then swapped out that Hooker for a 3" center in/offset out straight thru Magnaflow. While not obnoxiously ricey loud, it was still too loud for what I'd want now-a-days.

If I remember right, there's no difference from 3" to 3.5" under 550whp, or at least hardly noticeable.

Yeah, I want it even quieter than that as you know.

I would like to verify that, if it's true, it'll be much easier to make something quiet in 3".

Ha, that's funny. The three of us that modded our cars to hell all now want quiet exhaust and a quieter interior. I dynamatted my car a few years ago back when I still had the 3.5" exhaust. It does make a difference.
