Slow '91 Talon
3 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, I have a 91 Talon I bought a few years ago off of a member. Ended up needing a new motor, so I bought a shortblock off of another member. Paid a "former shop" to have the head redone and put the motor back together and in. Using a pocket logger I was seeing crazy advance at WOT. Brought the car to DB, and ended up with right around 200 to the wheels. I figured that wasn't too bad with an auto, 14b, and only 550 cc injectors on a stock fuel pump.
Last year I added a FMIC (bought off of here), and this year I plan on going e85: 255, afpr, 1200 cc RC injectors, wb02, and a tune. Maybe using a BBK throttle body? I have one, but I'm not sure about fitment. (Everything I see is about putting a 1g TB on a 2g, not the other way around. Plus I'm not sure if the sensors and shit will transfer over, whatever though, it was cheap.) Mods are: supposedly balanced bottom end, 8.5:1 pistons, arp headstuds, cometic HG, zero'd out MAF-T in blow-through, FMIC, MBC, and 550's. I'm sure you guys don't care, and this is a pretty mild build. I also figure I'll be asking questions as time goes on, so I might as well have a central thread to ask them in. If you want to know anything else, ask. Pics to follow. |
Re: Slow '91 Talon
Another auto dsm. plans on a differnt turbo? You should bring it to proving grounds this year.

Re: Slow '91 Talon
I'd like to stick with a stock mitsu flange and not a ton of lag, so maybe a 16g. I'd like to find one used and within my budget.

Re: Slow '91 Talon
No need for the BBK, you'll add problems and a slower response, not power.
|
Re: Slow '91 Talon
My TB is leaking, so I figured as long as I have to take it off I'd put the BBK on. But if that's the case I'll just replace the seals.

Re: Slow '91 Talon
EF1!!!
Welcome mike, good luck. |
Re: Slow '91 Talon
I would go with the ef1. I have seen it in action and they perform very well in the auto car. post some pics up.

Re: Slow '91 Talon
Sounds like a good setup to buld on!
I would maybe save some of your money and not get a afpr though as Shane can tune around them with a single 255. That bbk throttle body also seems like it'd be more work than its worth to get it to fit on a stock 1g intake mani. Get an FP68hta over those map turbos ;) |

Haha, I won't say that's farfetched. Cars and I don't get along much, I'm close to switching hobbies.

Re: Slow '91 Talon
Well, I understand why ebay parts have the reputation that they do... bought a jpipe from cxracing... what a f'n piece.
At first glance it didn't seem to bad. I went out there to visually mock some things up, hoping to get rid of my ghetto over the manifold hot pipe. There are (at least) 2 problems with the piece. First, the flange on the bottom is WARPED. bad. Second, the welds on the flange are super close to the bolt holes. One side is okay, one side I'm going to use a recessed hex cap screw, or whatever they're called. It appears that, without a washer, the head size is small enough to fit flat. I should've just spent the extra $30 and bought a real part. |
Re: Slow '91 Talon
Ok, pretty sure I've acquired all the parts: Link, 1200cc RCs, Walbro 255, fuelab afpr, small 16g with external gate setup, and a FP race manifold. If I was 200whp at DB with the stock SMIC, 14b, and 550s do you think this will realistically do 300+ with the new setup on e85?
Either way it's time to start taking shit apart. |
Re: Slow '91 Talon
I would say 275 at DB. Joel on here had the same setup as yours pretty much except evo 3 16G. He made 291? at db. Just my guess though
|
Re: Slow '91 Talon
Do you have a front mount? I would say 275 is realistic.
|
Re: Slow '91 Talon
Plus its thru an auto.
|
Re: Slow '91 Talon
So what should I be looking at next? Head and cams? Or save my pennys and buy a real turbo?
|
Re: Slow '91 Talon
a choice between the Evo 3 16g and 272s would be a hard choice....unless you can get them both. 300awhp sounds very fun.
