DSM for DD?
 

Jest was thinking about using my 90 talon tsi awd for a every day driver. I have to rebuild the engine. Plan keeping it stock for the most part. So how many of you out there use your dsm for a daly driver's. What is the pros and cons. And would this be a smart or not lol. I have had people say yes there Great cars and then Others say sell that pos fast as you can when it is done lol. So what do you guys all think?

It all depends on what you do to it. If you rebuild the engine and you know what you're doing, you'll be fine. If you're guessing and looking here for rebuild info, you're probably best off with something else. They make a great winter car with stockish fuel control and such.

i dd my 90 only thing i hate is seeing her al saltly knowing im gonna have to fix some rust when spring comes around

It can be done! Stay on top of maintnance, fix anything that breaks with quality parts as quick as you can to get it back on the road asap. Keep the mods basic and plan your mods carefully so they can be installed quickly and efficiently, and don't go too crazy powerwise.

Truf. What other mods do you have? That is a perfect base.

Oh, forgot to mention: get AAA Gold. ~$100/year and your ass is covered. I have had it since I bought my 1G in 2002 and have carried the card (and used it) ever since. Always pays for itself several times over, guaranteed.

Do what Scheides said and you'll be fine. Id also suggest at least some all seasons or blizzaks during the winter months.

Good point, but this should be true for *any* car. Snow tires in the winter, summer tires in the summer.

When I say DD, I drive mine ALL year round. This year is the FIRST time I've actually not driven it in winter :(. I'd suggest doing the usual maintenance check ups. I haven't had any major issues other than the alternator going bad on me during the winter. DSMs are equipped with the 75amp alty, GVR4s have the 90amp alty...that's probably why my car has gone through 3 alternators. Other than that, I really did wish I had a set of winter tires and summer tires because it'd actually be quite useful during the snowy snowy snow days. I religiously change my oil/oil filter ever 3,000 miles and luckily...I don't have a heavy foot. The GVR4 has been my DD for college and it's definitely done it's fair job :D

my mods are; e316g, 2g mani, exhaust system, 550s, 190 pump, fmic, dsmlink v2, 2g mas...yeah. REALLY reliable when they're not hacked or half-assed built and don't have shitty/crappy previous owners.

I DD'd my 2G year round, fixed shit that broke as quick as I could, never had any freak-out points where I had no idea what I was going to do about transportation. But at the same time I stayed on top of maintenance and more often then not picked up the parts I needed before the dying ones failed completely.

I'll echo what other people said. I've DD'ed my 93 tsi awd for a few years now. Just recently had a little crisis when the water pump imploded, but that is solely because I ignored the horrible noise it was making for months and months. Lesson learned there. Had it been fixed sooner, i'd still be driving it without a hiccup. But i have a backup car.

I dd'd a modded 92 GSX and it works, but damn man, that thing raped all of my free time with repairs. I would say that for a DD a DSM is a no. Half the time that I DD'd my DSM I had a back up Neon waiting to get used.

I absolutely love my Tsi, AWD with Blizzaks, its lightly modded, S16g, injectors, FP and Shane tune. It is a snow eating monster. 168k on the clock, never left me stranded. (hope I didn't just shoot myself in the foot) Maintenance is the key to keeping any car, especially a DSM reliable. Just like anything, dont half ass anything and keep mods light, and you should have an awesome all weather cruiser.

Daily drove all mine, only cars i've owned other than a neon. They arent to bad unless you have a shit ton of mods, or a car that wasn't very solid to begin with

I daily drove my modded '92 GSX for 3 years year round and it only ever left me stranded once when the alternator went out, but I drove for 3 days on just battery power. The car still drove great when I sold it.

I currently drive a Red FWD 2g DD, horrible in the winter wow, so far this winter alone i've been left stranded many times with, balljoints snapping, axles breaking, clutch going out only because of bad previous owner maintenance but now is 100% solid + other things done as preventative maintenance. Yesterday it was -5 degrees out and started right up on my stock 155k 7-bolt.(mods list in sig) hmm only thing is that its a huge risk driving in the winter with these dumb asses, you might wreck your beauty.

If you never go into boost you'll be fine for a while haha. I dd my 95 TSi for a year or so, worked well as long as I didnt push it too much.
