Re: Julian Assange
So true.
I can't help but think of this... http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/im...1085724795.jpg Unfortunately, the majority of our society has their head in the clouds. The chance of bringing accountability to our government is quickly vanishing. |

It seems there will always be a group of people that will fight for your freedoms, regardless of whether you want them to, yet you will also always find the people that call these people Criminals and Terrorists (i am willing to bet the gov will end up calling Assange a Terrorist before xmas.) |

Re: Julian Assange
Tom - Did you just really compare Assange to TPB? One site that allows people to download music and movies, and another site that is leaking classified government information? Umm.. ok.
While I agree with the statements made by others saying its good to know what our government is doing, it is NOT good to allow our enemies - both foreign and domestic - to know what we know and what we are doing. That is just giving them an upper hand. I wouldn't go as far as to call him a terrorist, but being in possession of illegally obtained, classified govt information clearly makes me a criminal. What if someone from the Taliban or North Korea hacked into a computer and stole this same information? Would you be praising them too? |

Agree with Pete, theres a difference between what should be said and by who. For example Tom, its not my place to tell everyone you like it in the butt.

The information was not illegally obtained BY Wikileaks, but given to wikileaks by a source, anonymously, Wikileaks just presented it to the people so they know what their government is doing. The same thing is done when a source goes to a media outlet for a breaking story. Wikileaks is not targeting the US, they have released information about many other countrys including China, and Iceland. Its not like they are giving out battle formations and locations/names of 007 spys. We are talking about videos and information such as the video of the US killing the reuters reporters via helicoper, which shed light that we seem to be blowing anyone away gathering in a group of more than three people. |
Re: Julian Assange
Ah Tom and his blinders at it again.
Answer my damn question - What if someone from the Taliban or North Korea hacked into a computer and stole this same information? Would you be praising them too? |

Let me pose a question for you, Do you think we should get rid of freedom of speech, so that people cannot say bad thing about the government? Do you think we should get rid of the right to bare arms? People use guns to kill people in this country every year. We have a right to know what is going on with the people we have elected, but like every freedom we possess there are consequences should the information of freedom fall into the wrong hands. Sorry but the question you asked cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. |

Not to go on a tangent, but something I think about is the video you spoke of. It's sad to see that. It'd be equally sad to hear that if those were actual enemies, and they shot down the helicopter and killed our troops simply because they couldn't fire because of some rule of engagement. It's a tricky line, sucks for both sides :( And also, the massive amount of cameras, and video cameras, in my opinion now simply shed light and let the everyday person see what happens. Not that it is anything new, but the fact that everyone and their mom have video cameras on their cell phones makes it so people actually see what happens, where-as before similar things more than likely took place but the old Polaroid wasn't quick enough back then to capture it for everyone to see. Anyhow, interesting stuff. G'bye :) |
Re: Julian Assange
There wouldn't be people like assange if our gov't didn't do so much shady shit.

Re: Julian Assange
I've tried pretty hard to stay away from this sub-forum but then I see Assange brought up and I have to say something.
No I did not read the article originally posted in this thread, instead my info comes from CNN and NPR. What Assange has done is not acceptable. I do not care how paranoid you are of your government or how much "shady shit" they do you simply do not have the right to know everything. There are very real world consequences to what has happened here. This WILL hurt America no matter how you slice it. It is going to make the task of obtaining information vital to the successes of the American government that much harder to get due to information lock down. This will lead to a higher failure rate in diplomatic proceedings, which in turn HURTS AMERICA. This lock down is going to come about both internally in our government as well as externally with what other diplomats around the world are willing to say in front of our diplomats. We all have private lives on this forum. But imagine if say I for instance could get all the information I wanted to about everyone on this forum, and then hosted all of their dirty laundry regardless of what it contained. Would you really want your entire private life exposed for all to see all across the internet? No you wouldn't and you would then clam up, and make it even harder for anyone to get into your life, and to what effect? Not any good effect thats for sure. Dirty laundry needs to stay in the hamper where it belongs, not airing out for the public to see. Assange needs to be brought to justice on this. Do I believe in free speech? Yes. But do I believe that everyone deserves a seat at the free speech table? Fuck no! This table needs to be reserved for those that won't abuse it to spread CLASSIFIED and SECRET information to the world. This shit is CLASSIFIED for a reason people, this shit is SECRET for a reason. You want access to this shit, serve your country and get the proper clearances. This is real life. Not some Tom Clancy novel. |
