how necessary is the lower timing belt cover gasket?

Quick question before I run to brookdale mitsu before they close. Replacing water pump and my old one just cracked and fell apart... So arguably it wasn't really doing anything in the first place. I might just throw the cover back on without one.

Anyone have any reason to believe the little gasket is necessary?

Not really. It helps keep road grime out of the TB area, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Ask yourself this:

Are you feeling lucky?

Shit, with my luck, I wouldn't get down the driveway without a suicidal squirrel jumping up in there..
