What made you sell/partout your DSM?
 

I see more and more people getting out of DSM game and stepping it up to a better/newer platform. To be honest, I have done the same quite recently, going to German, "darker side".

What are the key factors that drive you away from your beloved talons and eclipses? Is it the age of the car, the status, the upkeep and maintenance it requires, or perhaps you just feel like you have grown up for something else?

Putting close to $20,000 into min in a 5 year stretch, only driving it 7,000 miles in that same time frame, finishing it, then having my 5th transmission go out on me after paying $2400 for it and last me 30 miles.

The last transmission was the last straw. I am moving onto Evo's. More fun anyways :)

I would thinking going to the German side would be the opposite of what you would want to do if you want less upkeep and maintenance. :)

At this point with the price of Evos, I think DSMs should mostly be used as dedicated race cars. They are great for that, not so great for daily drivers.

I built the car I wanted, but no longer want. Maybe it's me getting older, I don't know. But shitty idle, laggy turbo, lots of vibrations, loud exhaust, I was cool with it before but now want something a little more "mature". Comfy leather, cushior, more displcement (more torque less lag).

That's what I was thinking about if I ever got a 1g. Having a 1g as a race car or a serious power machine for the drag strip is what I can see it ever do if I ever had one.

As for selling the car, To me, I think it's just too old to maintain but that's what you get for having a 20+ year old car. I'm still going to keep the galant because there have been a lot of people who have sold their gvr4 have regretted it because of the rarity here in the states. *sighs* still up in the air about selling it though.

I jumped ship because I wanted the car to be something that was going to be very expensive to make it be. So looking at the $$ spent v.s. what it would be worth at the end, the C5Z just made more sense.

Engine let go in my 1G @ 162k miles, was sick of screwing around with it and made far more parting it out than I would have whole. Got the S2000, then a Laser RS AWD as a winter beater, decided I missed the Mitsu game, sold both, got a IX, got sick of that too, then bought the X.

To this day I'm not sure why I sold my 1G. Because I bought my 2G I suppose; I was having some maint issues with the 1G and was kinda iffy on it when the 2G landed in my lap so I jumped on it.

The best story I have is when I bought my evo8. I had the 2G for idk, 40k miles over a few years and lots of stuff kinda crept up on me. A/C worked great but whenever I ran it the car would over heat. This problem was KILLER for my wife. Add to that some other misc issues I had and endlessly trying to fix the overheating problem, turbo blew up and at one point i was spending $500/month on the thing just to keep it on the road it seemed, plus the car payment. I didn't care, I LOVED the car! I had paid around $9k for it IIRC and it was worth around that with the mods I had on it.

Well I got a new job and had to drive more and more and more and was shopping like crazy for a second ~$10k car, an A8 or something to ease all of the commuting miles i had ahead of me. I test drove 3 cars and my wife Anna laid out some hard numbers for me:
Monthly payment on DSM + Monthly payment on Car#2 + Insurance on 2 cars
vs
Monthly payment on a lightly used Evo + insurance for it.

Jaw dropped but I loved my 2G so much I said no! It overheated one more time after that. It got so hot it melted one of the fans right off of the radiator (no idea how). I test-drove an IX that night at Brookdale and if they would have found me a black SSL I would have bought it; I got my 05 evo8 SSL two weeks later from a local seller. Wingless and all!

How I got my X? Well, they call me flips mcgee.....

People who are saying a 1g dsm can't be a DD aren't correct. You have to keep your overall goal for your car in mind when you mod it/do things to it. People put a huge laggy turbo on the car, do tons of mods that detract from reliability and streetability, then complain about how it sucks to DD it. If you are smart about how you mod, a 1g can be a great DD.

The point about the cars just being old, is very correct. Even doing good maintenance on a car, the age will just start to catch up with it and you'll just be changing/replacing everything to keep it in tip top shape. Pretty soon you've replaced all the mechanical parts of the car just to keep it going.

I have been DD'ing my talon for 2 years. I don't mod it much, any time spent on the car is just getting it maintained/replacing stuff to keep it as driveable and functional on the street as possible. It has a few mods to be a bit faster than stock as well. Its a practical and fun DD. I even autox and rallyx with it on the weekends. I do put up with some naggy problems though, but nothing too big.

You just have to be smart about things, and know what you need in a car.

The advantage of an Evo is its faster with OEM components, and in general newer so you dont have all kinds of stuff just going bad from age. I'll be going to an Evo before too long, but i'm cheap :)

As long as a guy can put up with a ratty old car, and all the rattles, etc. this is all true.

I had mine for 7 years only put about 5k miles on it and had a parts list above $65k, and it still wouldn't run properly or make more than 430whp. So it was time to part it out and get my Evo that I always wanted.

I owned two DSMs that I never put together and bought an Evo instead.

I don't like rust. My Talon had too much. My Evo has virtually none. Pretty self-explanatory.

the rattles, very much so. Old cars rattle and you'll drive yourself crazy trying to fix them, so I just ignore them :) As for ratty, I won't own a 'ratty' (read: smelly, interior falling apart and mistreated) car, that is disgusting. My interior is always very clean. Exterior is another story, but who really cares about that for a cheap DD? :)

I've owned 4-5 DSMs and I've actually had Really good luck with them. ive daily driven every DSM ive owned and im currently a college Student. Then again mine all were either close to stock or were lower mileage. Im building another right now that will be more of a road race car im thinking, and it will be the last one I build for awhile. For me its just the hassle of having an older car. They are reliable if you take care of them and replace parts, but on a newer car you dont have to worry about replacing a bunch of stuff. I also am not overy thrilled with some of the dis honesty that takes place with these cars now days, wheather its buying the cars, or the parts for them. overall its just nicer having a newer car.

I love DSMs But for me personally ive spent so much time effort and money owning one that id eventually like to find something else, prefearably newer

This thread is funny to me, a car is how you build it, mine? Made 440/460 at map for the last year of its life, got driven MN to TX numerous times raced the shit out of it, before i sold the thing it got the best tune ever maybe it was happy to be home but for how it was moving I would say that it was over 440/460 it made before i left.

I put on over 80k in my car in the 3 years I had it, (all 3 years were over 400@map)any problems were from me all these issues people are saying about the car, acting like it was purely the cars fault, whether it be drivability, power, what have you I say BS. This DSM is number 7 and I've never had these crazy issues with any of them.

Oh yeah why did I sell, because I made money on the deal, got to keep some key parts and found a cheap replacement for $200, I've always wanted to start from stock (old car was a tin can) and I've always wanted to build a motor so once I've done that the car can do whatever.

I sold mine because I got sick of dealing with it. It ran and drove just fine, didn't hardly rattle at all but I just got sick of driving a nearly 20 year old car.
