Does anyone know where a good place other than the dealer to buy stock piston rings? the dealer gave me a $145 price anyone below that around here?

Raptor 05-04-2004 12:19 AM

We had to get .050" over for a set of 2G pistons and they were $150 from turbotrix. Stock rings are way overpriced IMO. Not sure if there is a much better deal around, Allan could tell you, he did the looking.

You could try Concellie (sp?) but yeah they are a bit over priced. Probably best price would be if you worked at a dealership or something and got cost or close.

MustGoFaster 05-04-2004 12:58 AM

http://www.mitsubishiparts.net/ is fairly cheap. You need the part number though. Just get it from Concellie (sp?) and paste it in. Was like $108 or so I think.

Kracka 05-04-2004 01:02 AM

Chris Cabe can give us pretty good prices at Brookdale Mitsu, he has always been cheaper than Conicelli for me.

Raptor 05-04-2004 01:06 AM

We usually go through them as well, but I don't think they could give us much of a break on the rings we were looking for. Maybe they will be able to get yours at a better price, worth a try.

1quick4 is looking into his dealer price i believe its around $100 through him? this is for 1g stock piston's btw 6 bolt... like it matters

520Talon 05-04-2004 01:16 AM

It matters to me!! I am finally going to get my heap up and running. 1G stock rings and bearings are on my list. If you can find them cheap do forget to drop me a line.

I've mannaged to fill four gallon milk jugs begging downtown on weekends for my rebuild money and I think it will be enough. Note to self, need to bring three legged dog with me next time, she gets way more than I do!

How much time/how difficult is it to change the piston rings if the short block is already out of the car?

honestly, if you've never done it, don't ask.
All you have to do is unbolt the rods/pistons, pull off the rings, re-gap new ones, break glaze, bolt back together.
and thats the cheap and sloppy way to do it.
I don't like re-ringing motors, but thats just me, ask mike, he knows a hell of alot more on this subject.

haha you left a few things out... if your just replacing the rings the method above works fine...but if your gonna replace the bearings also(main and rod) you have a bit more of a haul ahead of you. You have to unbolt the rod's(put the crank at bottom dead center before unbolting) push the #1 psiton out and #4 because there companion cylinders. Then you have to unbolt the main cap's theres 5 of them total (there are two webed together). once your done with that then the cleaning procces begins...if your lucky like me you have a dishwasher at school and you can let it spin in there and it will come out nice and clean! (man that thing works wonders!) once your this far dont give up like most people I know do...........start puting things back together...fisrt the main bearing's, and the front and rear seals. obviously your going to have to put only the top half in. oil them with your best friend the oil can. Next the crank needs to go in. slowly ease this peice in, and if it doesnt slide in nicely you have a problem somewhere. once thats in. you need to put the rest of the main bearing's in the main cap's. the single cap is the thrust bearing that bearing is the one thats different looking then all the others(it has side's on it). then you have to plastiguage... next your must put assembly lube...lots of it too doesnt hurt.once you've done that tighten to the specified torque. then your going to take a rubber hammer or a copper hammer and slightly hit the ends of the crank back and forth to set the crank in the right spot...........man theres way to much to explain and i missed a few things ...just pm me if you want to know more lol...

Enes 05-04-2004 10:11 AM

and make sure that if there is any gaps... somethings wrong and you need more lube to fill in the gaps :)

lol sorry... j/k ..

That's pretty much it. Hey, I've never done it before; but I did it. It's always good to learn stuff yourself w/ hands-on experience.

PS. Swanny, it's "maintenance" ;) (your sig)
