Can a blown/damaged turbo, ruin an engine?

I have just been thinking about this and I was wondering what would happen if a turbo went to shit.

The only way I think it would harm the motor is if the compressor wheel broke into big enough pieces to harm the engine.

^ That and the fact all the oil leaks out and you could cease the engine if you continue to operate the vehicle. Im sure no one would continue driving under those condition its quite the show.

The pieces would never make it through the inter cooler.

D - i don't get what you are saying.

I was wondering about the center cartridge, would any bearing matter make it down teh return line? or block it?

Though you where talking wheels. I would think it could in that case. It would have to be a serious fail.

I'm just wondering anyway a turbo failure would jeopardize the motor or anything else in the car.

I've had a blown turbo jepordize not my car, but the car behind me when I shot exhaust turbine shrapnyl out the tailpipe. When I removed my lower IC piping there was some pretty fine silver specs / mist in there (probably shavings from the compressor wheel carving into the comp housing). There was nothing found in my upper IC pipe, but the specs in the lower pipe were pretty small. No idea if they could have made it through the stock SMIC, but I wouldn't be suprised if some did.

At that point, maybe it's too small to cause any serious damage though? No idea, just sharing my one exciting turbo failure experience. This was a 14b which was installed in my old 2G btw.

Thanks. It helps.

They can sometimes shread the center housing into pieces then drain them into the oilpan... Good thing for oil filters, but that doesn't help your oil pump... I've blown 2 14b's and Nate blew his 14b without motor issues.

Yeah, the shavings dumped into your oil can wreck stuff.

Yea, I blew my 14b @ 26lbs, no problems. Just replaced the oil, oil filter and the turbo. Didn't even pull my IC piping. I did completely blind 2 lanes with smoke on 494 though...

I had a bad t25 and it was smoking like crazy, especially at stop sign. When I wot it shot a puff of smoke out. People behind me would always switch lanes. haha

Re: Can a blown/damaged turbo, ruin an engine?

When I blew my 14b the wheel shattered into my intercooler. The pieces ended up being in the intercooler inlet. I think some may have made it into the engine, but that's an assumption because the engine was just fine afterwards. Slapped on a new turbo and it was good as before with compression results being the same. Loads of smoke too btw.
