how do cam shaft dowl pins snap .. ?
:scsa: so we were driving along and and its making the usual 1g lifter tick and something else starts making noise were like what is that i thought it was a bad rocker but the engine ran fine ... but then... we tried to limp it home and it quit running ..

I'm assuming the dowels that the gears slide onto. My guess is that they were improperly installed.

Dowel pins are just for alignment when installing, if the cam gear bolts are properly torqued they are not needed to keep the cams in time. A snapped one could be a number of things including improper installation of the pin, improper installation of the cam gear on the camshaft, an incorrectly torqued cam gear bolt, or just a defective pin from the get-go. If a stock pins fails after 20 years though, that could just simple be fatigue.

must not have torqued the cam gear bolt down all the way and the gear spun on the cam and snapped it.

ill take some pictures ... sounds like all valves on the exhaust side are done ... no compression btw this engine has 250,000 miles on it with regular oil changes with mobile 1 syn 15w40 i was hoping to make it to 300,000 on it before something went wrong .. lol

The cam bolt loosened up, if the bolt is torqued properly it is the friction surface of the cam gear and cam that keep everything in line. This is a case of if you have an engine still running after the factory warranty or a ton of miles it might be a good idea to check everything over.

the funny thing is the cam's where never touched ... all stock just did the t belt changes every 30,000

No red lock tight used on cam bolt ftl!!
