i have had my power steering/ac belt come off a few times and didnt know what was wrong, finally i brought it into a shop and was told that i needed a new idler. Is this what i need? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...sspagename=WD1V
if not, what do i need to make sure these belts dont keep getting thrown off? |
no, you car only uses an idler for the timing belt. your should check your crank pulley to make sure it not comming apart.
|
thats why i asked here cause i was confused on why they told me i needed an idler when my accessory belt came off. ive already replaced the tensioner and the tension is fine, what else could cause it?
|
check your harmonic balancer /crank pully. the thing will fall apart and buck belts
|
whats the overall condition of the grooves for the pulleys? any dents in them?
|
ill check the pulleys tomorrow, im pretty sure they are in good shape still tho. What should i be looking for on the crank to tell if thats the problem? thx for the help guys, i dont feel like spending 350 for them to "fix" the problem

serpentine belt or ribbed v for power steering. check it. Take a flash light and check crankcase pulley or also known as harmonic balancer which also holds accessory belts. Probably the tension needs to be adjusted so it is tight enough. loosen adjusting bolt. Once desired tension is met, tighten adjusting bolt and check again. Need correct tools. There are a few people or shops who I would let touch my car if I had too after I have owned and been involved with owning a fast eclipse. Why I do all work. I cannot believe they said replace idler. There is tensioner pulley and idle pulley which timing belt goes around. They must be on LCD OR SMOKIN POT.

Sorry about the lsd thing. Its just the fact that the shop has no idea whats going on. I have a harmonic balancer with bad corners. They were chiped and the groves were rusted badely. This caused a twist in the belt for power steering. It never came off, but that is because I replaced it immediately. So if you see chip markes, bad rust or a warped or bent pulley with bad corners, MAY BE THE DIRECT CAUSE.

well if this is what they mean by "idler" would i just be better off buying an underdrive pulley? also what part number should i look for when i go to get a belt, anyone?
|
Don't get an underdrive. It's an RS, leave it stock! Also the underdrives don't dampen the vibration in the crank, so they can lead to premature failure of the engine. That thing probably isn't putting out enough HP to worry about it, but I still would stick with stock.
|
well i also have 2 tvs, an 90w computer and some other stuff running so i didnt think it would be a good idea anyways, haha. any idea on that belt #, where would i get a new crank pulley also
|
Stock harmonic balancer, dont get aftermarket. Someone else mentioned this. Just give dealership model and yr of your vehicle and they should have a belt in stock. Mabey not the balancer. Say everything twice with them and confirm with them. Thay have unfortunately made mistakes.

Mr. Raced always used the throw belts on his 2g it would only buck under High R's when he'd tach it up to about 6,000, Simple fix dont tach it up that high.

Mike told me something about putting one of the pulleys on backwards on the water pump, granted this was on a 4g63 but I could see how you could put the pulley on backwards and not realize it. Apparently one side of the pulley has a wide tapered end and that is known to throw belts if installed backwards. Worth checking into...

Yeah on the 4G63 it's very easy to put the water pulley on backwards (not sure about the NA). I've done it and it threw the belt. Also make sure the Alternator pulley is not wearing. Use a big flat ruler or something to make sure the alt belt is in line with all the pulleys. Or just eyeball it really good. Something has to be out of line, or one of the pulleys has to be bad.
|
Yeah also a problem with 2g 2.0 neons throwing belts.

Yeah DSM97RS, i had a 95 Gs and it would throw a belt every now and then. I talked to a bunch of guys with the same type of car and they said it is a common thing when revving high and especially when you launch or spin the tires. Just try not to rev it so high on launches, and dont hold high rpm's for very long. :secret:

awesome, im glad i didnt spend the money to have them put in a new pulley. im guessing i can pickup some belts forom autozone or stores like that, anyone know the part number i need tho? thanks
