How low is too low?

What is the lowest someone should go with plug gap before replacing ignition parts? Plugs are a .028 right now and getting some blow out, have seen dsm's and the likes go to .025 before but wondering how safe it is.

I run my plug gap at .024. Have for the passed 2 years. You ideally want to run the largest gap possible without blowing out the spark.

Re: How low is too low?

I started at .035 and .032 and it worked fine, now i've put it down to .028 and still have some plug blow out. I know i have a boost leak as well, but it's pre-MAS. So the AFR is running fine, but i get in the higher rpm range and she shakes good and i've felt it before. And those gaps are at different plug change intervals, and i have run .028 for a while with no issues with the old stock turbo's.

Thing that is driving me nuts, is the car only wants to put out 8 psi give or take, and i'm not sure if it's the wastegates not fully closed(which doesn't make sense being at a constant) which is where these wg's open. Go though all the trouble upgrading turbo's and i have to spend a week trouble shooting the problem. It's a slow gradual building of boost too, but i know i'm getting blow out, that's easy enough to fix. The boost leak testing equipment is purchased, just has to be fab'd up and tested.

I threw plugs in my Talon at .028, they generally last a year or so there, then I get new ones.

I change mine out religiously, and i have been made fun of for it, but ya know what? When a plug change only costs you about $12 with the intake gasket, why not?

With my old 16G setup, anything more than a .025 would get spark blowout. I have heard of some people running as low as .018 on here (style)

Re: How low is too low?

if i ever have to go smaller than .025 i think i would start replacing parts right and left to fix the problem, and get a better spark. Think i'll re-gap the plugs in there tomorrow, seeing as they only have about 50 miles on them. No point in buying new ones... just yet.

Re: How low is too low?

I have seen as low as .009". Most E85 cars I run .025" at the max, .022" for most high boost setups.. Evo 9s run around .022" from the factory. A lot of high boost Evos, Hondas, 240s, Supra, etc run .018"-.022".

Put it down to .025 last night, drives great now. Short of the PS belt and tensioner pulley going on me today. :drive1:
