Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.

Looking to get this to hopefully get my ass more active.
Anyone have any suggestions on any similar priced bikes?

if you check craigslist you should be able to get a better bike for that price.

I was thinking about that, but I don't know shit about bikes, haven't had one in 14 years

dont buy a $100 full suspension bike. At that price it is totally just for looks and most likely rides like poop. If you want to ride around on pavement/ smooth trails and gravel get a "hybrid". They are comfortable riding position like a mtn bike, but have larger diameter wheels like a road bike so they are faster. Their quite a bit of fun to ride.

I think what you should be asking are what brands you should be looking at. Then once you have the brands that would work, look it up on CL. I dont know enough about bikes to really make a suggestion. I was looking but forgot which brands i was looking at.

Thanks 9, i appreciate the help.
I just ran thru CL nothing really good there esp. for $100

$100 really doesn't buy you much of a bike. Any non department store brand is going to be similar quality, espically at lower price points. They are all made in the same asian factories and get different stickers slapped on them. Shimano and Sram components are good stuff, but they do have many different levels of quality.

What kind of riding do you want to do?

It will end up being mostly street, but I want to do trail type stuff with it too.

well, if you really plan to take it on mountain bike trails, not just bike paths you will want a tru mtn bike. If your budget is 100, you can either get a new department store bike, that will be new and shiny, but heavy and probably never work 100% correctly. Or buy a older used "real" bike. It will not be shiny and new, but it should have better quality components that if taken car of work correctly.

something like this

Dept. store brands only come in a few sizes, and I've never found one that will fit anyone older than 10. They are also lower quality and put together by a Walmart/Target employees, nuff said. Hit up your local bike store. They have much better quality, the knowledge to get you onto the right size bike and will help you pick the right kind of bike for what kind of riding you'll be doing.

I ride a 2006 Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc and love it. A good bike is definitely worth spending the money on. $350 will get your a Specialized Hardrock Base, maybe cheaper if you buy a closeout model. Some bike shops sell used bikes too so you can watch for those.

Just look on craigs list for a desent used bike. use key words like Trek Giant Specialized schwinn Etc. and you 'll find something in the $100 range. If you really get into bikeing then spent the money on a new Bike. The department store bikes are junk.

I bought a late 90's schwinn Mnt bike last year for $40 it needed a little tweaking but was a great bike. put over 200 miles on it in 1/2 a season last year. Biking is a great way to get out and get exsersize I lost around 30 pounds since this time last year.

Real men ride 20".

But yeah, mountain bikes come in all sorts of variaties. You can't be expecting much for $100 unless it's used,I have over $1k into my 20". So I'd check out CL/garage sales if you haven't been told that 100 times already.

Also, check out JensonUSA, they have a Closeout section that has had some MTN bikes go through. Trek, Giant, Schwinn, those are all good brands. Diamondback is a great brand too, but don't bother looking at online reviews, they've been caught redhanded 5 starring their own products.

Oh yeah, and in some towns, you can go to the police station, tell them you've had your mountain bike stolen, they'll ask for a general description, say a black mountain bike(or your preferable color), and then you can go see the bikes they have found...;)

P.S. this is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

Re: Going to purchase a mountain bike any suggestions.

Be careful with the cheap Schwinn and Diamondback bikes sold at department stores...its just a sticker slapped on a crappy bike. The good ones come from dedicated bike stores.

my advice is don't buy a department store bike. $100 won't buy you much in terms of an actual decent bike.

Look into Specialized, Trek, or Gary Fischer. They are all quality bikes.
