GM MAF Question/Concern
So today I dropped my car off at a reputable shop to get my 3" GM MAF installed. Had them do it since I don't have anything to cut my mild steel IC pipe. The tuner there has a dsm so I felt confident my car was in good hands. To my loss he was not in until later which my appointment was at 10am.
Anyways here is my concern. I have never seen the gm maf installed in this location (lower then the bov). My thought was it has to be 6"-8" from the throttle body on the upper part of the bov. Now it's going to measure air after the bov blows off? Will I be running rich between shifts now? I'm running ECMlink V3. The car has not been driven yet because I am waiting to get a tune so I have the stock MAF hooked up. Pictures after the instal. Sorry my garage is dark. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...G/f926984d.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...G/e1bf3d21.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...G/e57c7143.jpg |
Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
It would work fine, besides venting of the BOV.

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
With the GM MAF pre-BOV you will need to recirculate back into the intake pipe. Definitely need to specify exactly where you want things installed when you have someone else do it.

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
Maybe they thought the pipe went the other direction and they cut out the wrong section. My UICP actually fits both directions just fine, see if you can re-arrange it so the BOV is down low and the MAF is up top.

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
F**K.. So I just got off the phone with them and they said they would have to recharge me to redo it. I was like what kind of customer service is that and they told me they are short on time. Also stating they would have to charge me $500 to redo my ic piping. That is F-ing BS! They took my $80 and basically did an incorrect instal. So tomorrow I'm going back with my car and speaking with the shop owner because I am pretty pissed right now. I figured they knew what they were doing because there tuner is a big dsm guy. Sucks for me today was his off day which I had thought in the beginning he was going to be doing the instal.

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
To me, there doesnt look to be room to squeeze a gm maf between the bov and the tb...looks like the put it in the only place they had space, and since you didn't specify, they just put it where they could.

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
GM MAF belongs in a GM :)

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
you couldnt spend $10 on a hacksaw?

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
I am with asshanson on this.
Maybe I am over simplifying it but couldn't you just flip the pipe around? It appears that there is enough room and you could easily try it in 20 minutes with just a screwdriver. If it doesn't work your out 20 minutes of your life (time better spent than rubbing one out IMO). |

Hmmmmmm?? lol Looks like you should be able to flip the pipe around and make it work. |
Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
As said before, try fliping the pipe around.

I'd like to see a GM with a Mitsu MAF LOL

Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
He wouldnt be able to flip the pipe. The peice they cut was the long pipe going down. They would have needed to relocated the BOV flange to where they put the GMMAF, then put the GMMAF where the blow off is. (this is my old FMIC setup i had on my 2g.)
What you can do however is this: 1. Measure the distance of their cut for the GMMAF. 2. Grab a hacksaw, and cut the pipe on both sides of the BOV. so you have the section where the bov flange is. 3. Take the main pipe to a shop that has a welder, (doesnt have to be that shop just a shop with a welder), have them weld the BOV where they put the GMMAF, but make sure if they have to add pipe to equal the distance of the space that was cut for the GMMAF and make sure that its straight as well. and that you mark it well so that they know where you want the BOV positioned on the pipe. 4. Make sure they bead the ends where the gmmaf will go. 5. After its welded up, place the GMMAF where the BOV was located, and cut pipe as needed to make it fit. Shops usually dont charge too much per weld, I borrowed a friends welder when i made those pipes. The key is to make sure you mark them so that they can line up the marks and weld where you want the angles. But if you can get them to fix it for free, its much better. The shop should have called you or asked you whether you wanted it higher or lower then the bov IMO, or at least asked the tuner. |
Re: GM MAF Question/Concern
*UpDate*
So I met with Bill the owner of MAC Autosport and he said he will refund my money or if I get a new uicp reinstal for free. But what I'm thinking is relocate the bov lower then the gm maf and call it a day. |
