Blue Smoke HELP

Im getting a lot of blue smoke out of my exhaust under boost, some will come out during boost when i let off the throttle there's a momentary delay and a poof of it will follow. A little more randomly when in vacuum. When its parked and i rev it, NO smoke. It is only happening when the turbo is in use.

HELP?

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Blown turbo seal most likely.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Check for shaft play on the turbo, sounds like what MattD said.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Yeah, thats what my scm61 was doing, and that thing cut a 1/16" grove in the compressor housing. If its not the turbo it would likely be your piston rings. But usually you want to suspect the turbo first.

ahhh :( julien just took the turbo off my car, said every thing was fine, replaced the exhaust wheel. Said the Oil return line is too small/restrictive. dear lord and baby jesus please don't let it be the piston rings?

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

do a compression check and post up the results, also repaint/debodykit your car (if thats your car as your avatar.) could be the fiberglas/poly on fire. LOL just givin ya shit.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

I dont have the stuff to do a compression check, maybe Twack will be real nice and come down to winona? and instead of debodykiting it, how about change my name to Brian Earl Spilner?

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

I just learned how to check compression....

4- 3- 2- 1
170-168-168-150

Put a cap full of oil into cyl 1 (from the spark plug hole) turned it over for about 10 sec, cyl 1 went UP to 170. RING?

ALSO, KINK in my return pipe, possible cause of oil smoke. I'm going to remove it as sooon as i finish my psych hw.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Low compression won't cause your car to smoke when under boost. That kink isn't doing any help.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Oil return is off, "kink" wasnt half as bad as i thought it was, i'm not sure how much it was even restricting it. There was a mess of oil all under the car however. The oil definitely wasnt making its way completely down the return but that could be because there was no gasket on the turbo to the return...

If i have oil in my intercooler, will it eventually push its way out? or will it just sit in there for ever? (until i take it off and dump it out?)

Constant_Project21 04-05-2010 01:12 AM

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but oil in your intercooler, usually means something was goofy with your turbo. Oil's not supposed to be in your intercooler, and could explain the smoke, as you couldve been burning oil from your blown turbo.

As for getting the oil out, just take the core off and clean it out. 10mins and a can of brake cleaner, and it will be good as new. You will wanna get that oil out, or else you might be chasing down a problem that doesn't exist anymore (by that I mean, if you're turbo WAS bad, and has since been fixed, you may still have the same symptoms).

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Gasoline works also in the intercooler to clean it I heard.

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

The oil return has to be perfect, that could be causing it, if it isn't good enough, especially after high rpms or boosting it.

Putting oil in your cylinder while doing a compression test is useless. You have dished pistons, so filling that dish in with fluid is always going to raise the compression readings. If it was 100% rings causing the excessive smoking, then it would probably smoke like that all the time.

Ordered new oil return line kit. Will be dumping the intercooler today, and my catch can. PS thanks for all the help on sat DR. Shane!

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

do a motor flush with cleaner, you may have a stuck ring...

Re: Blue Smoke HELP

Was it just the seal? or is the thrust plate wore out which caused the seal to leak? Sounds like the garrett I have...
