ARP rod studs/bolts
I was wondering if this should be done on a motor that was just put together or if it is too late
It is a 1g rod 2g piston combo and I want it to put up with 350 to 400 hp without wondering if it is going to hold. The bad part is that the pistons are on the rods already... Can it still be done by a machinist or will the pistons have to be taken off of the rods for this to be done? Is it worth it or are the stock rod bolts strong enough? Opinions? Thoughts? smart ass remarks?:) |
Re: ARP rod studs/bolts
Probably has no relevance to a DSM but the Evo X guys do rod bolts in the car fairly often...they just drop the pan and pull the oil pump sprocket.

Re: ARP rod studs/bolts
At that hp range, you can probably just leave it as is.

Re: ARP rod studs/bolts
the 1g rods the bolts are a press fit in the rod, so the rod piston combo would have to be popped out of the block.
yes the rod bolts can be changed with the pistons on the rod. when the rod bolts are changed, the rod should be checked for round and resized as needed. the 2g rods run a grooved slip fit bolt that can be changed in the engine with less of a chance of being out of round if caution is taken to line the grooves up with the new bolts to the old grooves in the rod bolt bore. |
Re: ARP rod studs/bolts
ok what if I say 500 hp? How far can I push this setup this 1g/2g combo do you think?
At what point would the ARPs become needed? Just curious on what this combo is capable of... |
Re: ARP rod studs/bolts
if you go 500hp... get H-beam rods and forged pistons..... unless your an expert at tuning.....
the arp rod bolt is a nice upgrade but by the time you buy the arp and have the rods resized, you can add about $50-$75 bux and get a set of ebay knockoff H-beam rods (which are still a 4340 chrome-moly like Eagle) |
Re: ARP rod studs/bolts
My wifes 1G has the 1g rods/2g pistons and makes almost 500awhp on my dyno, which would be around 575awhp on a Dynojet. C3L1CA's 2G on here has 1g rods/1g pistons and made 595awhp on my dyno(1 run) which would be almost 700awhp on a dynojet, it has lived at around 550awhp for a long time. The car trapped 140mph at around the 550awhp level.

Re: ARP rod studs/bolts
Rod bolts mean nothing with respect to HP and everything with respect to RPM.
