Wireless Internet setup with Xbox Question

Hey guys,

I'm posting this for a friend of mine who lives in a duplex. The neighbor (Apt. A) has charter internet going into their residence. My friend (Apt. B) wants to get internet on their side for their computer(s) AND their Xbox 360.

I'm a computer guy but I don't do any gaming so I didn't know what to tell them what they need. Does (Apt. A) need just a regular Linksys router attached to their cable modem and (Apt. B) need a Linksys wireless bridge to give them the ability to attach their xbox via Cat 5?

Thanks for any answers.

Apt B have Apt A's permission to use their internet?

Re: Wireless Internet setup with Xbox Question

Technically, if Apt. A doesn't set up any sort of WEP or WPA password for their wireless, Apt. B would be able to get their signal via Apt. B's wireless router. Connection would probably suck though, especially for gaming. Charter's 5mbps connection isn't that expensive, tell them to get their own. It'll be much better for what they're using it for.

Re: Wireless Internet setup with Xbox Question

Yes, Apt B has permission. The owner lives in A and is a best friend of unit B.

At this time, (A) doesn't have any wireless at this time. It's a direct connection setup (modem only). So I didn't know if they would have to purchase a regular Linksys router and a bridged Linksys router. I found some articles that you can turn an old WRT54G router into a bridged router with some firmware.

Re: Wireless Internet setup with Xbox Question

Apt A will need to get a wireless router to for Apt B to be able to get their signal. I would recommend setting up some sort of WEP or WPA encryption keep any other unwanted leeches out. Just set it up on Apt A's computer, then from Apt B connect and type in the password. Voila!
