Re: hx-40

The only thing is oil pressure. You have to be VERY accurate with how much oil you're giving them. That is why a lot of people have problems with them.

And DSMs change their oil pressure per setup, rpm, motor build, oil pump age, Bshafts, oil pump years, oil cooling, hair part, shoe lace orientation, etc. FAR more than any other engine on the planet. PTE has a bad rep because of sh!tty DSM oiling problems. Its DSM oiling that sucks, not PTE (AKA garrett center sections). It's not the manufacturers fault. Its the haphazard, random oil pressures that dsms run on various setups.

Use any gauge: oil gauge, old fuel pressure gauge, old air compressor gauge, old water pressure gauge for home water feed lines, who cares. Get SOMETHING on there after the lines and restrictions to actually see what your oil pressure is. Rev the motor in neutral and find out the oil pressurea at idle, theoretical spool up rpm, and peak oil pressure (should be at redline). Per the holset repair manual for the hx35/hx40: Warmed up, the oil pressure for the hx35 and hx40 should be no less than 10psi at idle, and no more than 72 psi. It should be no less than 30psi at spooling time and after. A bolton hx35 sees 20psi at about 3700rpms and spools damn early so you had better have 30 psi at 2K or you could be eating turbo bearings. An bolton hx40 sess 20 psi as early as 4K on a 2.0L motor. Check your oil pressure. As stated, you MUST have 30psi during spooling up conditions with these turbos. And you cannot have more than 72 psi pressure at full song.

Best post ever made for anyone looking to buy a holset!

I've gotten two H1C's on ebay for great deals and they're both sweet. There are always HX40/H1E's on there as well.

How much power are you trying to make? HX40 is pretty big.

(side note: doesn't anyone enjoy modding there cars slow anymore, or does everyone just want to go faster than the next guy)

Comeon, we all know size matters

Re: hx-40

There are many different versions of the HX40. The best ones are good for nearly 700hp in a bolton housing, and the worst ones are close to the same hp wise as an HX35.

There are 6,7,8 blade compressors, and 10 & 12 blade turbines. Some compressors are bigger than others as well. The 12 blade turbine is for the highest hp, and the 6 & 7 blade compressors are supposed to be much better than the 8 blade ones.

HX35's are a lot simpler, since the two main ones are 7 blade compressor and 8 blade compressor. The 7 blade flows more so it's a better match for a larger T3 turbine housing, and the 8 blade matches up very well with the small bolton housing.

Now I have a 91 GSX auto that I'm running a Holset H1C (bolton) on with no intercooler. I like the Holset so much already that I bought another one for my white car.

im really hoping for 450 hp, and i have a small 16g turbo, with alot of supporting mods already. i just seen that the hx-40 turbo seems good

Re: hx-40

If you're going for 450 on a dynojet, the HX35 should do it pretty easily with good fuel. 450 on a dyno dynamics however...?

not sure yet, are the holset bolt ons? or do i need kits?

Re: hx-40

For a direct DSM bolton, you need the bolton turbine housing from Bullseye Performance. It seems like they have again became hard to find though. Look up G-Pop Shop, they might have some.

I have been very happy with my turbo (6 blade comp, 12 blade exhaust HX40), , other than having 2 brand new ones fail me.

What's the deal with that anyways? This is a HUGE turn-off for me, and I'd think for anyone else even remotely interested in these things. Oil pressure issues or what?

Tim's Turbo's might be another place you want to try out.
