shimming a manual tranny on a 1g??????...help
 

i think i have heard somewhere that you can shim you tranny on a 1g, am i crazy? or if im not where can you find info on it? thanks

If you have replaced the bearings in the transmission, then yes it needs to be shimmed.

This is to set correct bearing clearances. Shims go under the bearing races. The bottom race on each level is pressed in but the top one slides out for the shims. To do this you need to know what to set each one at and how to check it; if you don't you shouldn't mess with it at all.

This becomes more critical as your torque level increases, and it should help for shifting at high RPMs. If too loose, the gears are not making full contact, so they'll break a lot easier. If too tight, the bearings will have a huge load on them making them not last long.

There's really no difference between a 1G and 2G. The whole tranny is pretty much the same other than some differences in the early 1G's. I actually had '90 internals in my tranny for a year or so.

so if all im doin is puttin a tranny with a fresh pro rebuild onto my car and doin nothing internally, i dont have to do anything special?

Actually.....

Maybe you overheard shimming, but not transmission shimming itself. Sometimes when using an aftermarket flywheel, turned down flywheel or aftermarket clutch the distance between the throwout bearing and pressure plate increases too much.

The only way to fix this is to shim the pivot ball that the fork pivots on.
