Harmonic balancer grenaded!

Well I was TRYING to tune my car on a road by my house and in the middle of a 2rd gear pull it sounded like a bomb went off, ok well not that bad but it was not good. Instantly my battery light, some other red light, and my check engine lights come on. I realized that the CEL came on because my coolant temp started to rise above my settings in Link. I looked in and there was no belt so I thought that the belt just went on me. I get back to my house and realized that the grinding noise I was hearing was the harmonic balancer was in 2 pieces gringing on each other and rubbibg on the car chassie. The harmonic balancer was only 2 or 3 years old. I am thinking the harmonics of my 2.3 and quick revving had something to do with it maybe? Any ideas? I was looking into replacing it with a fluidampr brand harmonic balancer. Anyone have one on their car?

Everything else should be good.

That is a common problem with dsms. Thought my motor was gone on my first dsm. It was dark out and impossible to see under the hood where I was at. I have never heard of fluidampr before.

Re: Harmonic balancer grenaded!

The factory has designed the balancer to take care of crank shaft harmonics. I would compare a 2.0 and a 2.4 balancer to see if there is a difference. If there is I would try to run the 2.4 damper, or buy the one that uses fluid to dampen crank harmonics.

I've been running a fluidampr for years.

Did you notice a considerable difference?

the 2.0 and 2.4 are the same for the oem's. I will be running a fluidampr on the 2.4 when I get it the rest of the parts for it.

Worst feeling ever. Imagine this happeneing and you get stranded on the side of the freeway, on a bridge, on the outside of a turn, during a massive snow storm. Oh, and your battery died because you tried to limp it to safety. I seriously thought I was gonna die....no lights during a blizzard = bad.

Mine however, was simply gone:

I've seen alot of them come apart and kick belts, tear up the timing cover, break a BS belt, or bang the shit out of the framerail. I've never seen one like that. Usually the center piece is still bolted on

ino, on mine it wasn't immediately obvious that anything was missing, it was just gone and the belt was loose...though it kicked the belt off.
