Stowing a motor Need Help PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
So I recently picked up a built motor for a sweet a$$ deal. Issue is Im deployed. Im home for 2 weeks of leave right now. I should be getting the motor in the next couple of days. I will be stowing it in a climate controled storage unit. The motor will be sitting for 6 monthes. The block and head are seperated.
Now for the questions. Should i keep them seperated or put the head back on? How should i cover it? Put oil, lube or any kind of grease on it to keep the parts fresh? Any input will be awesome. Thanks Ross |
Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
Assembly lube or fogging oil + plastic trash bags to keep everything protected. 6 months really isn't that long though, especially if its in a climate-controlled environment. A light coating of fogging oil should do a nice job keeping rust away.

Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
So i got the motor today. It is seperated the head is of and so is the oil pan. There is debris on the inside of the block. So Im in a big pickle. So what should i do leave it and worry about it in six months? Have it cleaned and put it back together? Can i keep the block together and clean it or does it have to be full disassembled to have it cleaned? I know if it is hot tanked it has to be full disassembled. Basically im asking if there is anyway i can clean it without having to take the block apart? Any help would be great?

What type of debris?

Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
Like little bits of styrofoam and most like dirt and shit

Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
I think you'll be fine, just follow Kracka's advice. FWIW, I had my block & head sitting for well over 1 year.

Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
Cause he had over 5,000 dollars done to the motor with only 100 miles on it and he sold it to me for 1700. I knew when i was buying i was going to aleast have to drop a grand into it to get her back up in the game.

Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
its better to be safe than sorry. it's not in a car, the heads off, it isn't hard to tear the rest down and clean it just to be safe

Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
I would still tear it down and inspect it. I bought a built short block that I was told was in running condition, but once I tore it down I found two bearings had spun because they were installed backwards. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Stowing a motor Need Help
I have heard too many stories where a person buys a motor that was supposedly "built" or ran properly according to the seller, only to have it fail a couple hundred miles later. Better be safe than sorry, I would clean it up as long as its out of the car.
