Drivetrain whirr on deceleration
I've heard this described as the "wub wub" sound, the whirring that happens on decel. It seems to be getting louder in my 1g.
I've heard that using some shims on the front or rear carrier bearing could help, to correct the driveshaft angle. Has anyone had success with this? Or is the problem that i've got a worn out rear end? |
Re: Drivetrain whirr on deceleration
If it sounds like it's coming from the back of the car it's probably your differential.

how can I tell for sure?

Re: Drivetrain whirr on deceleration
Post the specs of your car so peeps can make better educated guesses. Miles, lube history, etc, etc too.
It's hard to get under a moving car with a stethoscope to check every little thing. |

The Galant VR4 guys had some success shimming their drive shaft to help eliminate the noise. |
Re: Drivetrain whirr on deceleration
Another thing you can do is unbolt your driveshaft from the diff, and try to turn the input shaft. If you can turn it more than a few degrees before the wheels start to turn, it's worn out.

93 talon tsi, 155k miles, bone stock, the Redline cocktail in the transmission, MT90 in the rear end (I think). Dont know a whole lot about the history as I just got it this spring. |

Nevertheless, I will probably end up trying that. Is this a common noise? Anyone here ever had it in a car? Ever fixed it? I'm really looking for personal experiences here. |
Re: Drivetrain whirr on deceleration
The shims are to compensate for the carrier bearings wearing out. Some people try the window weld fix instead which doesn't seem optimal to me. The shims are easily reversable.
I have the noise in my car. It's loudest on a third gear decel. It's not that high on my list of stuff to fix, so I've learned to ignore it. I will be addressing it though and plan to use shims to do so. |
Re: Drivetrain whirr on deceleration
Cool, makes sense. I'm gonna give it a shot, i'll post my results.

Re: Drivetrain whirr on deceleration
shims didn't work. I tried about 4 different configurations, no dice.
