16g compressor housing on a 14b REVIEW

Well I know there have been some question's about a 16g compressor housing on a 14b and since my 16g decided to let go, I picked up a used 14b from Dan (Constant Project). I put the ported 7cm housing from the 16g I had on there and I also put the 16g compressor housing on it. Here is a picture of the gap between the compressor fins and the housing..

As for the results.. I'm running a steady 20psi til redline. But the turbo doesn't hit full spool til 4700. Yes I said 4700rpm.. In my case this is good though! (FWD) I can actually get decent traction now in 1st and 2nd gear. The turbo also doesn't sound like a turbo at all. It sounds more like rushing air, no whistle to it. The car still pulls very hard but I haven't had much time to do any good tuning with it. Right now my a/f is ranging from 11.3 to 12.1 or so with about 20 degree's' of peak timing. I haven't had any time to really dial it in. My goal is to get it up to 25psi so I'll report back once I do and actually have some time to tune it.

That's what i always figured would happen, i have a 16g wheel and an 18g turbo and do plan on going with the 18g wheel, but always wondered how it would work. Keep us up to date, looking forward to how well it works.

Yeah, it's a bit laggy but it fits my car very nicely. With the 16g it would just hit 30psi instantly and I would just spin all over the place. So it's definatly a nice change. I'll have to take a video of me doing a quick pull and post it up.

toss a 16g wheel on there and get it balanced and i bet it will spool awesome

is that gap between the inducer and the cover as big as it looks?

then it would just be 16g..lol. 16g compressor+16g wheel+ported 16g housing= ported 16g...if my math is correct.

The bigger the gap between the compressor wheel and housing the less efficient the compressor wheel becomes. That thing has to be spinning like crazy trying to make boost, but at least it won't compressor surge.

I do have a 16g wheel if you want one. Would complete the turbo!

I already have a 16g wheel I could put on here if I wanted to go that route. But I don't plan on it. Yeah the gap is pretty much as big as it looks and yeah my boost controller is cranked down pretty good to achieve the boost level I'm at. I'm just gonna try and hit 25psi with it, tune it, and then probably put the 14b compressor housing back on.

That's what I was thinking. It kinda makes you wonder how long it will last like that before the bearings decide to let go.

I don't think that turbo would last long spinning that fast. I had entertained the thought of doing that and I believe I even posted it here. Obviously I decided against it, I'm going to try my luck with a chine e3 16g.

Do post up a video though. :)

+1 on the turbo working its nuts off to create boost! I hope it doesn't grenade on you. Cool that when the bearings start to go it can be extra super sloppy shaft play and not ding up the compressor fins :D

yeah, way to totally mess up the design of the turbo. :)

Haha, if you wanted lag, just get a 50 trim or something?

I put up a WTB add for a turbo and noone really had anything good. I was really interested in the frank4 that was for sale but Mark picked that up. So then I just got a stock turbo and used the rest of the money to buy ecmlink!

I have an 18g CHRA with no wheel laying around, but i'm still holding onto that baby for a future "Project" and a rebuild. 20g on a FWD is a nice combo, got to ride in one up north a while back, the lag although not bad, is enough to give your tires a chance to hook up. After boost though, it's up in the air.

Yeah traction is always gonna be a problem.. That's why I put 18's on the car! (sarcasm)

Jeez. At least put the 14b compressor cover back on.

If you read my posts above I plan to put it back on. But why not be the ginnie pig and do a review for the people who are wondering?

Re: 16g compressor housing on a 14b REVIEW

Put a 20g cover on it and see if it makes any boost at all, lol.
