So I figured I would share my latest project with the group. Ever since I installed 18 inch wheels, my stock brakes have bugged me. At first my car had FWD calipers and rotors so I upgraded to the AWD calipers and rotors

Still, the large wheel left a ton of area around the rotor that drove me crazy, didn't look proportional. So I started looking for other options for the future.

Baer brakes make a kit for the car, but still a dual piston with a pad not much bigger than the my AWD pads and a slightly larger rotor. StopTech makes a kit also, and it's nice, but the price isn't. Then I thought about 3000GT VR4 4 pot calipers but there wasn't a rotor that would clear my wheel. Thought about Evo calipers, but again, price and the rotor would hit my wheel.

I did some research as to how people were getting VR4 calipers to fit. Some were experimenting with rotors off of Audis and other cars. I went to the parts store where they let me look through their parts book. They listed rotors, the diameters, bolt patterns and offsets. I found a rotor that was 14 inches with a huge offset and a 5x115mm bolt pattern (mine is 5x114.3) for 1/2 inch studs (mine are 12mm)

Bought that and test fit it to my car. The VR4 calipers cleared with a ton of room to go but I did have to turn some un-needed material off of the back of the rotor so it wouldn't hit the knuckle.

At work one day I was looking at the calipers on the Vipers. They are a Brembo 4 pot caliper and is the same casting as Evo's, STi's, CTS-V's, etc. I decided to test fit one of the those, IT CLEARED! I was able to get a used set of calipers through my work so I just had to slap some new seals in them and paint em.

Well bigger calipers = more fluid that needs to be pushed. I did some research and the 3000GT brake master cylinder is the same bore as the Vipers. Did some more research and the 3000GT master will bolt up to my booster. Just need to modify some of the brake line routing.

Here you can see that the center bore of the rotor is larger than the step on the wheel bearing. Also the holes for the studs are larger than the studs so the rotor is not concentric. To fix this I used a hub-centric centering ring to center the rotor.

So I bought some solid aluminum block to machine on the bridgeport at work. Here you see one bracket I started notching for the knuckle

I finished the bracket for one side. Took a little longer than I anticipated (about 10 hrs) but the quality is what I hoped for. I expect the other side to go faster since I have a game plan now.

Here is the wood blocks I machined to keep the caliper centered on the rotor. These are thicker than the pad so I can push the pistons all the way in.

Built the other bracket, went much better. Only had about 4 hours into this one now that I had a game plan.

Just gotta rebuild and paint the calipers, slot the rotors (I still need to order another one) and install everything.

Finally got new seals and dust boots installed. Also primed and painted the calipers Brembo gold. (same color as the brembos on STi, 350z, and others) I just need to finish slotting the rotors, build some brake lines and install the Brembo stickers and these will be ready for installation.

BTW, LOVE this color.

Does anybody know if the evo rear calipers come close to fitting our cars? Id like to get a set of them for the rear to match the fronts.

No worries, either Volk ce28n's or AME TM02's will be going on the car but in an 18x9.5. Eventually the car will be getting a fender pull to fit the 9.5 wide wheels with a 275 tire. Until then I have to rock the motegies.

Keep an eye on Evo M for some time attack CE's...They pop every once in a while. In the size you are looking for as well.

Evo rears are a direct bolt on with Evo rear rotors and lines.

Does the 2g ebrake set up work with the evo rotors?

Steering away from time attacks, too much red/black with the car being red and black. Id like to get a set of ce28n's in diamond black or gloss black. For the most part I am pretty set on the TM02's in gun black.

Very nice. Those viper calipers seem waayyy easier to make a bracket for than the evo brembos.

Thanks guys, it's more for show than anything but I cant wait to see how it stops. Im going to try my stock master cylinder first but I am sure I will have to upgrade that if I do the rear brakes too.


I was going to do that, but then they would have to stay red and I didnt want to add more red. It also seems a little cheezy in my mind, I want it to look like a kit or like it came this way. (like sti's, evo's, nismo 350Z, etc)

I thought it all looked like sex, until the gold paint. Don't get my wrong though cause it's still awsome. But if there going on a red 2g and black with a red lip rims. It doesn't seem like it would match you're color scheme very well.

Eh, I'd say black would look cool, red brembo stickers.

So do you think that tiny hub centric ring might get damaged or melt or something?
