Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

I know you guys have wanted this, as much as the women want me when I'm driving it, but the car is finally making some progress to post about.

The Evo (P00n) is down, which will soon have it's own project thread, so I wanted to make my DD more fun to drive.

A little history, I bought the car for my birthday last year, mostly to piss my ex off at the time and it worked, so the car holds a lot of sentimental value to me :) The dude was a crazy Texan Turbo Dodge guy, which I've come to find are cheaper than DSM guys, think of a used sock as an upgrade piece on this car.

At any rate, I got it with the following parts, maybe more but this is what I've found.
Stage II GLHS ECU
Upgraded Coil
Cheap crappy intake filter on the turbo by the firewall
An MBC the dude made out of tubes and T fittings, with NO boost gauge.
A BOV from something, but had a sock as a filter (+ 3HP I imagine)
No Cat in the exhaust but sporting a 2" system (That's what she said)
1 Piece Turbo 1 Intake Manifold
Pull Through converted to Blow Through
52mm Throttle body
"All" emissions ripped out, I'll explain later.

The car sat for a while, no TX registration. Hughes and I, as you know, had an epic journey picking BlitZen up and bringing it back here. Since then I've done the following.

I first got a Prosport (from MAP) boost gauge to see what she was even boosting at, found that the MBC didn't do much, silly fucking TD guys. I put that on and bought a MBC from DB Performance and turned the boost up to 10PSI, installed a new distributor cap, new plug wires and autolite 65 plugs. Red and I also moved the battery to the trunk and got new terminals along with the *Red Performance* Stage 1 Heat Shield. This is how you saw the Omni at the dyno day at DB.

The result was a mind boggling 117WHP/157FTQ, enough to shatter some parts of the universe.

Completed: 10:30PM 05-27-09

A few weeks later I decided to put on a few more parts. With the increase of power just from turning the boost up to 10PSI, I was hooked. So I added the following and turned the boost up to 13PSI then to 14PSI and eventually 15PSI.
Stock EVO FMIC
1G BOV (got from Kevin)
Custom intercooler piping (thanks to Brandon!)
Stage 17.5 Red Performance Heat shield (Type R)
Autolite 63 plugs (1 step colder gapped to .27 from stock .35)

To do all of these things, we had to move the radiator over about 5 inches and get a "slimline" radiator fan. We went to U Pull R Parts and paid 8 dollars for a daewoo fan that cut off 2" of depth. We also had to cut a lot of the front of the omni to put the FMIC in behind the stock crysler grill. Along with this process we pulled out ALL of the remaining vacuum lines, all that's plugged in now is the MAP sensor and FPR, I also moved the MBC to the turbo from the IM. The result was a loud ass BOV and a stock looking omni that actually started well and didn't have idle surge.

The car as it sits now pulls VERY hard, it's very easy to bury the needle, which isn't saying much since it's only 85.

Future:
Next up is an A523 transmission, a stronger clutch as it slips now in 4th/5th gear :) A 2.5" swingvalve with a 2.5" TBE, hand port of the exhaust manifold/intake manifold and then hopefully a tune. I'm not really expecting the engine to last forever, after that happens I'll get a stronger Turbo II shortblock/internals (for like $200) and turn the boost up to 18-20PSI.

The car as it sits is most definitely around if not over 200FTQ on DB's dyno, it doesn't take much to get 300 out of the TII blocks, so I'm hoping going from a 2" to a 2.5" exhaust will bring me up quite a bit. I've also been told with this setup it's probably around a low to mid 13 second car with only me in it of course :), which should walk most WRX's and keep up with Evo's/STI's. Only time will tell :)

It's already almost a WRX killer. It clung to my car pretty well!

Awesome project! Last night was a bit of a let down, but I expect good things in the coming days :D

This car really surprised me the moment I saw it down in Texas. Incredibly good condition considering its age and the thing felt great riding around in it! Sucks we had to stop that once after Bonedaddy's to wash all the pussy juice of the thing though...not even a big stick could beat those ladies off (TWSS)!

I'm curious as to where the WRX killer name came from...I'm guessing Janelle's WRX? Cause this thing would own my supa fast 143WHP WRX lol

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

Janelle's WRX would walk the Omni :)

I'm sure Shawn just named it that b/c the majority of WRX's are slow and most their owner's are douchebags. Besides, now Shawn can own the entire Subaru lineup, STI's with the Evo and WRX's with the Omni!

So very true, that is why I don't even bother posting much on MNSubaru, but I won't get into that now.:madashell:

BTW, Omni's rock, I can't wait for this thing to be tearin it up with some more mods!!

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

Yeah I'll explain more when I finish the top post. I just had to get back to work. The *stock* WRX or slightly modded 02-05's is a good goal for me because of exactly what Hughes said. I'm a huge fan of Subarus and always have been, in fact I thought about trading this for a GC8, but stuck with this.

Regardless I'll update the post later when I have time, I mean no offense to the cool Subaru owners, I just can't wait to see the look on the first typical owner's face when I beat him :)

Same here; Janelle and I no longer read/post on MNSubaru.

The only guys on there who're even remotely cool are the guys who rallyx. The rest are d-bags. The only time I ever spend on there is posting pics from said events.

Original Post completed, fucking having a spark issue again though. Cars are a PITA but so much fun!

In order to have a good running turbo 80's car, you have to think like a turbo 80's car.

Drop that spark plug gap down. Just keep going till the problem goes away man. Or throw money at it. New coil, etc.

Also, if you haven't already, perhaps when you upgrade exhaust systems you will be smart and add a coil and spark plug in the exhaust tip for hot flame thrower action. Mayeb it won't work since you don't really have a mass air sensor, but it might!

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

When does gap get *too* close? Stock calls for .35 which I think is crazy, I put it down to .27 and that helped a lot. The coil looks somewhat new and it's aftermarket, that's the first thing I thought. The Alternator is fairly strong at WOT at 14.4 volts or so (using a multimeter). I think the next thing I might buy is a new coil just to be sure, should I try gapping them closer? What do the old mitsus run for gap?

Kracka 05-28-2009 10:26 AM

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

Evo's run down near .020" and DSM's generally around .025-.030". You can try gapping them down further to see if it helps.

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

New wires may help?

Oh yea and we need pics!

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

She's got new wires, new plugs got NJK's today and gapped them at .25 and it seemed to help! I'll let you guys know.

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

Can't wait to rip it up tonight :D

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

Ya don't be afraid to bring the gap down to .24 if you have to. Smaller gap makes up for the point at which your coils cannot bridge the big gap recommended by the manufacturer for lower boost applications, whether its in top performing shape or not. +1 on a new set of plugwires, I think someone said that.

Kracka 05-28-2009 10:49 PM

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

It definitely seemed to like .025" on the new NGK plugs. I say try .027" tomorrow and see if it'll take that. I never had to run smaller than .030" in my 1G's, but those ignition systems are fairly strong. I think a lot of the issue lied within the Autolite plugs you originally purchased.

DoughtCom 05-28-2009 11:42 PM

Re: Project BlitZen (AKA WRXKiller)

Yeah I'll try that tomorrow. Effin' TD guys saying to get autolites! I've always liked NGK's the most but figured they had years of experience on this shit. It was fun cruising tonight, I think if I had just been in the car the MS3 would have been a closer match!

It's amazing how much it pulls in 4th AND 5th with two people in the car, just an absolutely fun as hell car to drive. I'm beyond happy with my purchase/hard work now.
