what to do with my engine?
So my engine is in need of a cylinder head ( 7 bolt ) that would run me somewhere in the low 2 to mid 2k's...
OR I could do a stock short block that is redone with the whole 6 bolt swap and everything for about 3,400-4,000..... What should I do??? the 7 bolt has 40k on it and the 6 bolt has 100k on the short block that would be rebuilt and freshend up... My car is at map at the moment and I'm sick of it! I need this running asap and map is gonna work with me a bit if at all possible... Also the price with for the 6 bolt includes a built cylinder head.. I have a couple threads out there that discuse my upgrades and where im sitting with the current head so feel free to check them out and then give your input. |
Re: what to do with my engine?
Why is a head going to cost you $2000? If you don't want to spend $$ on the car anymore a used good condition head would be much cheaper.

Re: what to do with my engine?
Get a cheap head (have sold 3 of them for under $200 ready to bolt on) and install it yourself.

+2!

Re: what to do with my engine?
I sold my stock 2g head (minus cams/gears) for $30, you can find them super cheap.

Re: what to do with my engine?
my head rebuild was 300 at cylinder head express. just a stock rebuild though. and another 500 for the port work I had done. isn't maps stage 1 cylinder head only like 900? or is that 2k with labor? and I'm sure there are plenty of people on this site that would help you do the work too

Re: what to do with my engine?
+ whatever everyone said. I had mine 6 bolt head installed by MAP also. If your lucky you will find a really good Non- turbo head at the junk yard like what I did. Or buy it off someone here. MAP did a great job and everything from head gasket, arp head, new front case, new oil pump, labor, Balance belt removed, etc for under 2 grand. Chris, Alex or Kyle will let you know what you need. Their really helpful. +1 for MAP.

Re: what to do with my engine?
A typical head out of a junkyard is $50-300 in good useable condition. Then you can have it cleaned, decked, tanked, and a valve job done for a roughly $150-400, depends upon the machine shop.
You figure labor to swap a head isn't that crazy. 7.1 hours per alldata for a headgasket job, figure an additional 1 hr for component swap stuff, so 8 hours @ whatever shop rate. If you can do it yourself, great. If not, it is not a cheap option. What is your quote for the used 6 bolt engine? You might as well go all out and just drop in a built 6 bolt engine if you are going that route. |
Re: what to do with my engine?
2k for a rebuilt head? I spent 2k to have someone build my whole long block.
|
Re: what to do with my engine?
^good point, hell I am sure there are plenty of guys on here that will build you a motor if you pay them 2k

Re: what to do with my engine?
You in Lino? There's a shop in Andover, not too far, called Northern Cylinder Head. They took my trashed head, removed my good springs/retainers out of it and put them into my good head, decked the head, cleaned the head (didn't clean the valves tho, bastards), swapped my SS exh mani studs over to the good head. Ended up being right around like $150 if I remember right. Not the "best" headwork I've ever seen, but not bad at all for the price.
If there is nothing currently wrong with the 7-bolt, and all you need is a head, and you want it back and running asap, just slap a used refurbished head on it and be done. I've also had the Crystal Red Rooster do headwork for me. They're work was EXCELLENT in my opinion, but the price tag was also a bit higher. |

I think I might be going with the 6 bolt option.. I got quoted on everything that I need plus a rebuild and assembly and all the gaskets arps, the swap and wiring, etc.. 3770 for everything out the door at map including a built head with my bc 272's put in and all PLUS TAX.. Good price?? |
Re: what to do with my engine?
Just go for it so you can get your car back and running!

Re: what to do with my engine?
Stock rebuild or aftermarket internals?
|
Re: what to do with my engine?
stock...
|
Re: what to do with my engine?
Under $4k for a fully rebuilt long-block including the swap labor is a great price IMO.
|
Re: what to do with my engine?
Yea, but I thought he was wanting a built motor? Why do it twice unless you can do it yourself for free? I wouldn't want to pay for labor on two motor swaps.
However I'd just skip the built motor altogether. Get this stock rebuild and you'll probably be fine past 500whp on MAPs dyno. What do you mean by built head? Springs/cams? Or 1mm oversize valves, porting, valve job, etc? A built head can cost over $1000 alone. |
Re: what to do with my engine?
Ya and its a built head too
|
Re: what to do with my engine?
What kinda turbo are you on, and what are your power goals? If you're still running an OEM shortblock, who cares about a built head at that power level. Maybe cams and some better springs. Anything other then that is money better spent elsewhere.
