Identity theft
Ok so I’m stupid… I was using the same username and password for my Email, PayPal and you guessed it! Mitsustyle today I received an email from “Share-It” an Eden Prairie, MN based Co that sells computer software. Someone decided they needed “Web Link Validator - 1 User Enterprise Unlimited License
Version: 5.0 (build 505)” A Web Link Validator is “a powerful site management and link checker tool that helps webmasters automate the process of website testing.” This program is also VERY expensive. The CD Key they emailed to me cost a staggering $1,272.68! Since receiving the emails “confirming” my order I have contacted my bank, PayPal, Share-It and My JAG Legal Office (Who went on to contact further authorities such as the FBI.). My bank has assured me the transaction will NOT clear my account. My bank and PayPal have both been “Red Flagged” and are on limited access. I have changed all of my passwords and security questions. I wouldn’t even know what to think if someone on Mitsustyle, with access my email address and password saved on Mitsustyle, decided to see if they could log into my Email account or PayPal Account. Although they used my Email address and my billing address, posing as me… I’m in Iraq and my IP address is substantially different than a US based IP address and thankfully they can trace the IP address used during the purchase back to the ISP back to the to the client… It can get a little tricky if the computer was used at a public location, using public internet, but the IP address is still logged and if that IP address signs back into the internet using their home ISP, they’re fucked. Not only is it considered a FELONY for Theft over $500 (you know that question on job applications and that thing about owning a firearm and voting?), that means there’s jail time and a fine involved… not to mention, you’ll be known for attempting to steal from a veteran of a foreign war fighting for your freedoms! |
Re: Identity theft
Sorry to hear of your ordeal; glad you caught it early on. Are you excusing someone on 'Style of doing this? Is so, how do you figure they got your password? Are you on a shared computer over there?

Re: Identity theft
wow that sucks, hopefully they catch him/her!

Re: Identity theft
Nono not thinking it was any one on style but that’d be fucked if it was. The only way it coulda is if some on here had access to the email addresses and passwords on here. It was prolly some dirty terrorizer here or around mosul scamin on our net. I’ve updated all my internet securities so hopefully I’ll be good. But think…. That coulda been the $ I’m going to spend on my DSM!!! No turbo upgrade think of the horror!

Re: Identity theft
I'm sure the passwords are all one-way encrypted or hashed in the database. At least every site I've made has worked that way.
However, this site doesn't use secure connections so someone could snoop the password over your internet connection when you login. |
Re: Identity theft
I logged into here and my email last week when I was on a wireless, “unsecured network”, at the pax terminal in Balad and I also signed in at Speicher. I’ve been all over this country so who knows who’s look at my info.

Re: Identity theft
makes me feel naked, almost raped.

Re: Identity theft
Yea, unsecured connections over a public open wireless network... you're asking for trouble. Especially with the same password, that's going to be the culprit.
I took computer security and (anti) hacking courses in college, you'd be amazed how quickly you can see other people's information. |
Re: Identity theft
Share-IT is a DigitalRiver storefront, give them a call about the fraud.....

Re: Identity theft
I wrote them an email, it's kind of hard handeling every thing from over here. :(
