Timing Belt? ?
My timing belt hasn’t been changed in about 55k miles. My timing is Good, but I’ve heard a lot of people say replace it every 60k miles.
I have a 1g block and a 2g head; do I buy for a 1g or for a 2g? What else should I buy besides the timing belt? I’ve seen people say… Timing belt Balance shaft belt (unless it’s removed, why is that done?) Idler bearing/pulley Cam seals Crank/TC seal Water pump And that I need… a Tensioner Balance shaft tensioner? There are kits on sites and eBay. The eBay kits are between $80-$100 other sites have kits for about $250. http://www.dsmparts.com/customer/pro...cat=121&page=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/90-91...Q5fAccessories http://www.maperformance.com/gates-4...t-evo-dsm.html http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/89-94...Q5fAccessories |
Re: Timing Belt? ?
The tensioner is for the TB. It is best to do all of that, but you probably don't need to do the crank seal, they usually don't leak especially on the front side. 1g and 2g belt should be the same. The balance shaft is removed because 1/2 the time when the timing belt goes, it is the balance shaft belt breaking and getting stuck in the TB. It is also less rotating mass and one less thing to go wrong.
None of the Ebay kits include the hydraulic tensioner and I get worried about the generic belts, I have seen several fail early in life. The MAP belts are very good. I like to use OEM stuff, except the kevlar belts, but that is just me. |
Re: Timing Belt? ?
so i dont need a seperate tensoner for the balance shaft belt? i did some reading on 4g63turbo.com and decided im just going to keep the balance shaft. i saw that map had a kit for about $60 but it looks like a lottt of work

Re: Timing Belt? ?
Things that are good to replace when you are there:
Timing belt Idler pully Tensioner pully Hydraulic Tensioner Water pump Balance shaft belt Balance shaft belt tensioner Cams seals if they are leaking, and crank end seal if they are leaking. Those items add quite a bit to the job and shouldn't be needed unless you have a leak. The job isn't to terribly bad but quite daunting if you haven't done it ever. Stick with a belt that is OEM, Kevlar, or proven. Stay away from the Ebay stuff, like Jet said, I've seen them go quite early. 1g block=1g parts. All the parts will be bolting to the 6 bolt items. The 7 bolt head means that your intake/exhaust/thermostat housing gaskets and bits need to match a 2g, everything else lower end is 1g. |
