A/V Audio Hookup Question!
I have a kinda cheap, but better sound than my TV, home theater in a box from Onkyo (It's a 7.1 setup). Reading the manual, it says even with HDMI sources connected to the reciever (it has 3 HDMI in, 1 out), no audio will play from the speakers unless there is a coaxial or Toslink (optical) connection.
I am hooking up my PS3 (Blu-ray player) and Xbox360 (games, nucca) and each has its's seperate optical digital out. My Tv has an optical out as well. First I had the setup connected this way: Xbox/PS3 --> TV Via HDMI, TV--> reciever via Toslink (optical) Would there be a difference if I did.... Xbox/ps3 ---> Reciever via Toslink (optical) and Xbox/ps3 --> Tv via HDMI Thanks!! |
Re: A/V Audio Hookup Question!
I believe i have the same HTIB (Onkyo 7.1 with the HTR550 reciever) as you. The HDMI is non upconverting, therefore hdmi must be from the xbox/ps3 and there must also be a HDMI cable to the TV. its called passive HDMI. no upconverting. I would do componant (green, blue, red) and optical. Thats what i use on my PS3.
Why wouldnt you just run the video and audio through the reciever? |
Re: A/V Audio Hookup Question!
The receiver won't let you run the HDMI cables right to it for Audio and Video and then have one HDMI cable out to the TV for the video? That is how ours is setup here and have no issues (DVD and PS3 HDMI right into the receiver and then 1 HDMI out from there to TV and I get all sound types (stereo, 5.1, 7.1, etc.)

Re: A/V Audio Hookup Question!
If I connect HDMI to the reciever, then HDMI to tv, no sound will play through the reciever. I thought it was dumb as shit, but then I assumed maybe thats how it's supposed to be.
So I had it setup as audio/video via HDMI to the tv from my ps3 and xbox, then the optical out to the reciever so the reciever plays whatever is coming from the tv, although the tv speaker is off lol. |

monoprice.com for cables. The way you have it set up should be good, ignore Tom, the components won't get you close to the picture that HDMI will. I run HDMI in to the TV and just RCA's out to the stereo. I am curious to try the digital out though.

Re: A/V Audio Hookup Question!
Way to look up a 4 year old article Tom. Anyway, components can transfer only 720p, they can not do 1080p. Also, the components are an analog signal, so you have signal loss and ghosting issues, unlike HDMI. Recent TV's will have HDMI 1.3 connections which have quite a few upgrades from previous versions. Also, in his case he is using a PS3 as a blu-ray player. The PS3 will not upconvert using component output, only HDMI, so it is obvious what he should use for the PS3.

Re: A/V Audio Hookup Question!
So I tried the HDMI to reciever, then HDMI out to tv. No sound from reciever, as the manual states.
So I currently have my PS3/Xbox -> TV via HDMI and TV-> Receiver Via Optical for audio. No other way. Pretty stupid. I might actually call Onkyo and bitch haha. |
Re: A/V Audio Hookup Question!
Did you make sure to the run the little setup on the PS3 to get audio through the HDMI cable?
