Cold weather issues?

I've already read one thread about the doors freezing shut so I figured I'd make a thread regarding cold weather issues.

I'm happy to report I've had none! The mini-battery has been able to fire the Evo up easily even with the FP4R cams and FIC 850cc injectors. After a few seconds of warming up it idles smoothly and drivability is fine. Also, the Redline tranny cocktail is shifting very smoothly in these below-zero temps.

My door locks were screwed up this morning could not get the car unlocked, at first thought it was frozen shut, but when I came home they worked just fine..I had to get a ride to work and was 5 mins late.

I can't open my mail box. Our mail boxes are small metal boxes outside that you have to open with a key. I was able to finally get the key in, but could not turn it. Guess I'll have to wait for a warmer day...

I'm finally able to park my car in a garage this winter and I love it! It's not heated, but it doesn't seem to get below freezing in there. Most of the snow melts off the car overnight, then doesn't freeze on the floor. No frozen doors or locks for me. The car did turn over a little slowly when I was leaving work, but that's probably cuz I still have Shell 10w30 in it. I'll probably have to change the oil sometime soon.

Re: Cold weather issues?

I've been thinking about switching to 5W-30 for the winter instead of my usual 10W-30, but after today I'm thinking its not needed.

Re: Cold weather issues?

This Shell Rotellla oil I'm using seems to be thicker than other types of 10w30 I've used. I get way better oil pressure with this than any other 10w30 I've used.

I used to use Rotella in my DSM's and noticed the same things. Great oil but probably a tad on the thick side for winter.

I thought Rotella was mainly for diesels

Re: Cold weather issues?

I haven't started my car in almost week now, I should probably check to see if the battery is dead before work tomorrow morning. It does have a hard time starting in this extreme cold, like a full 4 or 5 seconds of cranking. However the e70, 1600s, and no FIAV probably don't help one bit.

My only problem is I seem to have lost my car. I parked it in my lot the other day and now there is a large mound a snow where it once was. Keep an eye out for a purple dsm ;)

Its designed for heavy-duty diesel applications but is a great oil for turbocharged extreme-duty gasoline applications.

^never seen that.

Everything started ok, a bit slow, but the rolla only put out cold air after work until about 10 mins of driving then warm, I had it running for 15 min before i left work.

Correct! Two quarts of MT-90 and one quart of MTL. This is my recommended mix for all Mitsubishi 5-speed transmissions calling for a GL-4 gear lube. Now, for Hondas, go for straight MTL ;)

I'm running the Redline cocktail! Woot!

My tranny went from forcing it into every gear to smooth as butter..

Re: Cold weather issues?

I've got 5w20 Mobil1 in my 4g 3.8l. No starting problems at all the past two days. I run my oil for 12k miles and change filters at 3k and add as much oil as necessary. The current fill has 6k miles on it.

If I'm leaving from the house garage I idle something like 30 seconds. Parked at school tonight (-6f on the idiot box) I sat for a full minute before heading off. No weird noises from any part of the car, no weird shifting from the sportronic tranny, brakes fine, etc.
