Infared Heaters
 

Anyone have one? Anyone heard of someone who has one? Just curious to hear what people think the pro's and con's are. The advertise the amount of electricity at 8 cents a day or something to that affect.

My parents bought 2 of the Infrared Amish made "fire places" and they are very nice. First month they noticed it dropped their gas bill a decent amount. They usually keep the furnace about 60* or so and just use the heaters to keep up. Their house is about 1600sq ft and 2 work well to keep the place warm. Not bad for $300 each after shipping.

They really bought them cause my dad owns his own Heating and A/C business and can also use them for customers if their furnace has issues and he cant get parts for a day or so. Then people can still have heat. Good write off.

Would any of these actually be effective in a garage? Any chance for the radiant heat hurting paint on cars?

I was thinking about hanging one or two from the ceiling....

The ones that my parents have are "forced air" type so I couldnt see it hurting anything car related. Dont know about any other types.

Infrared heaters are 'radiant'. Think of beaming heat at people.

To actually heat up a large space you're going to move a lot of air across a heat source and then distro that through the room/garage.

One thing to remember, electric heat is always basically 100% efficient. There are some heaters out there saying they are more efficient than other electric heaters, that's not true. A $20 electric ceramic heater at walmart will be as efficient as the $400 ones that are supposed to be a break through.

The money savings that they talk about with these space heaters is that you can place them in the rooms you spend a lot of time in and turn the furnace down a few degrees for the rest of the house.
