Intake pipe, any tests?
Is there any real world performance gains to be had by changing to an aftermarket intake pipe over stock.
Anyone have any proof or experience (seen anything) Just wondering Aaron |
Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
1G intake pipe(1G mas) -or- 2G intake pipe(2G mas)
if you have the latter, the answer is no. |
Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
I currently have a 2G intake pipe, but I am switching to an FP intake pipe.
Just wondering if there are numbers or anything on bigger intake pipes. |
Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
Im sure there is a slight improvement, maybe not?

Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
i think it's sort of like comparing stock IC pipes to aftermarket IC pipes. there is a difference if you a 2g mas in a 1g, but it'll be little.

Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
I think you'll notice it's louder, and that it cleans up your engine bay. I don't see it doing anyting else, but hey who the hell am I it may give you better boost response (not that you need it) and how about a little more up top. After all it will flow better. Is that mas hacked?

Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
What I've read before is that since the stock intake tube has those "ribbs" it disturbs the air flow. So a smoother intake pipe should help some. Also read about a guy that wasn't seeing as much air flow as he should have with his turbo and it ended up being his stock intake tube that was restricting him. He also couldn't hold boost up top and the intake was the cause. Maybe it will help you hold more boost!

Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
I have not heard any proof of any HP gains. This may be because that it is such a small mod (and usually one of the first) that it is not worth anyone wasting their time testing.
On other cars, I have noticed it was a little louder (you can hear a whistle). On my dsms, all I hear is the turbo. |

A stock intake pipe is definitely a restriction at your power level.

Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
Are you fcking kidding me? You're still on the stocker at your power level!?!?! Geebuz. Upgrade that thing, it'll help you hold more boost at higher RPM. What FMIC and piping are you running?

Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
I noticed a huge difference. When I went to My cold air setup from a filter right on the turbo. Not shure on any difference if you still drawing hot air from under the hood.

Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
I am running an elbow down to the stock SMIC location it help, temps were cooler, less knock of course and I think a few lbs/min were gained too.
I have a 12x24x3.5 Precision core with 2.5" piping. I could never decide about what intake to get because they are all ridiculously priced not to mention I couldn't decide on turbo setup. Then I had some 4" pipe and its stupid heavy so I wanted something light and found an FP intake with recirc, couplers, clamps for $70 all said and done. I even have the extra reducer coupler. |
Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
My favorite DSM intake ever were my two Dejon ones. One for use with the stock MAS and a K&N (CIP-1gP) and the other an aluminum cold air intake that put the filter in the stock SMIC location (which I no longer see on their site).

^You lost me bro.
I said that I got an FP intake now and I have an elbow that I need to modify for my new k&N filter then I should be set. I actually need to re do my IC piping a little. |
Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
You had said you found one, I didn't know if that meant you just found one for sale, or actually found one and bought one. So was just throwing an option out there since you said the aftermarket ones were mostly over-priced.

^its cool. Hopefully we will see how much of a diff. this will make.

I have had several intakes, stocker, ABS, dejon tool, sweet chrome cast pipe, and a home-made cold air intake which was in the stock location. Personally, I didn't notice a change but then again I didn't dyno the car between intake swaps. I pretty much swapped them as I changed to bigger and bigger turbos. I wouldn't even think to consider the weight of an intake when looking for one. The weight relative to the rest of the car is nothing. My old cast pipe could have probably been made up by skipping dinner. A lot of people who posted on this thread have followed dsms for some time now. I am not a bit suprised that nobody has proof that an intake will increase HP. I personally would have done it long before but don't think that you will see much of a gain. If you see any, I would attribute it to the colder/more dense air. |
Re: Intake pipe, any tests?
Proven gains with 3" metal intake pipe + hacked 1G MAS + K&N cone filter:
