Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

I want to put an electric cutout on my car. I have a Buschur 3" downpipe and test pipe, then stock catback bolted on to the back of that.

I love it dead quiet for cruising around, car goes by cops unnoticed (kinda its a panda car).

Of course I don't want to lose performance so I bought a cutout, anywho I was wondering what is the best way to put it into the exhaust system.

I found a cutout pipe/flowtech at a local shop and it was basically a rectangle patch cutout on the straight pipe to suck flow from the normal route. My thought was that the exhaust would still want to go straight back or will it take the easier route of going out of the cutout?

I thought of cutting a hole in the test pipe and intersecting/block a lot of the flow with the cutout then I will for sure be getting most of the flow thru the cutout when it is open.

Thanks for your time and comments. I just want to do this the right way.

The cut out should look like a Y. It is made to go in the pipe. You are on the right track, the exhaust will take the path of least resistance, which will be out the cutout for most of it, some will still go out the exhaust though.

311evo has one, Its kinda cool, kinda meh. I would personally go for a high-flowing performance exhaust that was quiet as possible, weld in extra magnaflow mufflers and such.

I'd just score a used catback. All the dicking around of getting under the car to uncap the exhaust is a pain in the ass. Especially since I know you like to mix it up at any opportunity. :-)

^Damn right i do old man. Thats why I got an electric cutout, takes 5 secs to open.

Thanks for all the help guys, looks like that $20 flowtech is worth it.

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

I have a love hate with my C/O.

pros:
It works awesome
Keeps the cops off you a TON
cams sound uber mean
when you hit good boost sounds mean again
and then you hold the switch for 5 seconds and the cops would never think it was you
cruising with the cell phone, or music on is alot nicer.

cons:
you either super loud, super quiet, or you can open it just a tidge and have a shitty sounding exhaust leak.
over all shittier sound compared to a nice catback or turbo back.

all in all i recommend them pending on your situation, if your getting alot of trouble from the police i say definitely go for it, if not and you just wanna give a shot try it and see if you like it.

good luck.

^ Maybe I have something in store for them. :bath:

This is me here, I am in plenty trouble with the police. I don't have the cutout and i tuned it for the stock exhaust, the car doesnt like stock catback but I do. I hate cops and thankfully I am 80% unnoticable now its nice, but I can't give up the power.

For me all my cars from now on will have a cutout, unless there is something better. The only way that is if i own a camaro or something then maybe they will leave me alone.

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

I too am actually looking into this. post up what you got aaron. I love the no exhaust/exhaust out the bumper aspect, but I also drive my car all the time (summer) and still have music and such that I'd like to hear. I too would do an electric cutout, but I don't care to spend $500 for a setup..and, where would you guys put the cutout? I have a 2-bolt flange just in front of the t-case to the rest of the exhaust, to make tranny swaps easy, without pulling the downpipe too. but, most cutouts are a 3-bolt design. I also only have a 3" exhaust and I hear on my setup at higher boost levels, backpressure can become an issue. I don't care to re-do my whole exhaust again, so i'm researching this as another viable option.

What you looking to find out? My cutout basically replaced the test pipe/cat.
Its awesome 4 seconds to open and close, DMH performance with 4 year warranty for less than $200 even with flowtech.
I love it. Plus all my car has now is rims and a FMIC to anyone that see it, not even exhaust.

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

where did you get it? I assume you hold down the switch to open, it's not liek flick switch up, it opens 100% flip switch down, it closes 100%?

My solution:

Was pretty loud driving around with it open

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

The switch has to be held down for it to be working. Car won't rev out with the cutout closed, it breaks up about 4000rpms.

Swifty1638 12-21-2008 08:21 PM

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

why does it break up? you can't rev past 4k even on your old exhaust setup until you got a cutout? Weird.. I want to figure out a switch to just flip on, then flip off, but don't want to spend a ton on a controller.

That's what I'm looking at getting, along with teh "y" pipe from summit.

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

Haven't had any problems with mine, other then it didn't close 100% and started to give phantom knock.. lol

But we have the toggle switch, just hit it down and it stays open, don't have to hold it

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

Yeah, you would just have to use a different type of switch.

Swifty1638 12-22-2008 12:11 AM

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

Well, how would that work? I have a on/off switch, much liek a light switch, but i guess I'm lost on how it'd wire up.

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

It just needs power on to hold it open, so that should work fine.

Swifty1638 12-22-2008 01:41 AM

Re: Exhaust cutout/Exhaust Gas education please.

hm...but it flipped "on" wouldn't keep the motor turning with power going to it. And, closing it by flipping the switch off would take power away..so how would it then close? I'm confused. I HATE wiring.
