Can a DSM seriously compete handling wise with other top cars?

Well can they? I want to build a street car that can do anything. Had a crazy dream of doing a swap into a diff. car using the 4g63, but with all the work and money i might as well throw an el ess juan into it.

Anywho i guess the question isn't "is it possible" but more of how do you think i can, everyone knows that i am on a budget so no crazy ideas i understand with money anything is possible.

My 1G handled like a dream, I had that thing set up well for cornering. I think you'll be extremely happy if you follow through with your DSM plans.

this is with a 2g. http://www.farnorthracing.com/diary.html Looks like his car and some great driving was doing good on the auto-x course. I would think with some changes it would would tear up a road course as well.

Coil overs are so adjustable it's ridiculous. You just have to find the tune that works best for you and some FAT tires then you'll be golden.

Street Modified isn't exactly an easy class to compete in, either, so it's awesome seeing that car having done well. Last year the national SM champion (Mark Daddio, now drives AMS' time attack car) drove an Evo with an FP Green, wheels with a crazy front to rear offset (something like 18x10 in the front and 17x9 in the rear) and the other general suspension goodies. Locally the fastest SM car is a BMW 318ti with an M3 engine swapped into it and some meaty slicks. Anything is possible.

I would talk with the other autocross locals and see what class you would do best in, both with your car and behind the wheel of someone else's ride. I doubt a dsm would come out on top in anything.

Yes it can, no don't do it. I found automotive happiness (and probably saved tons of money) when I sold the talon and just bought different cars for different purposes.

They can but only with the installation of rear drive and a M-Mode button.

I totally agree. Especially on the money saved part.

You keep saying you want the car the best it can be. It doesn't matter if the driver isn't any good. An excellent driver in a but slow car will still beat a poor diver in the fastest car.

I want to learn to drive too, don't get me wrong but i don't want the car to hold me back or be the weak point.

Re: Can a DSM seriously compete handling wise with other top cars?

It will take you several of years of racing before the car becomes the weak point. It was the same way racing motorcycles, everyone would focus on tweaking the last HP out of their bike, but it doesn't matter when you go slow through the corners. I was riding an outdated bike and still getting top 10's most of the time. Use the DSM and see what you think a year or 2 down the road. You aren't going to be that competitive in the beginning no matter what you are driving.
