Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
Anyone have experience with a welded center diff? I am looking into a new tranny and the one I found has a welded center diff. My car is used for street use but is only driven on the weekends and sometimes during the week. What is your guys opinions?

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
I wouldn't do it unless it's a dedicated track car. It will drive like absolute crap on the street.

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
I have one in my trans and I drive a hell of a lot more than on weekends. If you have PS I would go for it because of the extra traction. But if you don't like me, it's a PITA to get out of parking spaces. I hear the tires chirp all the time when I park somewhere I can't just go forward out of. I've even killed the car because reverse gets "notchy" when the tires chirp.

Yeah, don't do it on a street car. I have one in my car and I will be taking it back out (welded VC actually, but they act the same). It is hard on the drivetrain and if you get a big clutch, it can make taking off from a stop much harder.

You could remove the welded diff and shim in a 4 spider diff.

nay, get a 4 spyder

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
What did the car put down on the dyno? Aren't you running a 50 trim? If so, I cannot imagine that much for traction problems. My old car hooked up good with a 60 trim.

craig had one in his car w/o p.s. and it was his d.d. he never had a problem with it you just have to get use to it

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
is a welded diff that rough for the streets? chirping tires just to get out of the parking lot?? i'm guessing it's going to be putting stress on the drivetrain.

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
I have one in my car and i hate it.

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
weld it all i say. just learn how to deal with it. ive welded diffs in everything i have owned and you just have to accomodate and park away from people or swing it wide

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
Nay. do the 4 spider, you will be very happy with it.

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
If a 4 spider costs $900, I would definitly skip it. Wish I had my old car to take you for a spin. Even with a decent amount of power an awd dsm will hookup pretty well. Maybe someone with a similar setup to yours can take you for a ride.

Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
Welded center diff makes driving your car a pain in the ass. Say good by to making tight turns, and hello to feeling like your going to break a drive shaft every time you try to make one.
The best money i spent on my car was the $850 for a 4 spider, after having a welded diff for about 2 years. The only good thing I have to say about a welded center diff is it makes it possible to drive your car home after you blow out a u joint. But if you want a welded diff I have one for sale. |
Re: Welded Center Diff: Yay Or Nay
welded = way unstable around corners... I had a welded and the car wanted to oversteer on entrance ramps and stuff... So if you like that sort of thing, you'd probly like it, but otherwise I wouldnt do it.
