Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
I made a heat shield for my alternator. I'm trying to gauge interest in these to see if I should make some more.

Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
Im not sure yet. I have to figure out what materials will cost.
I'm assuming around the $40 area though. Don't hold me to that though. |
Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
That little bad boy could have saved me two tripes to the 24hr auto zone when touching a wrench to it blowing fuses. LoL. But it's Fugly

Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
Just grind on it for a little bit, have them Powder coated and voila. Function.

Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
I only had time to make it, not paint it.
I'm going to use high temp engine paint. A low gloss black. |
Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
I cleaned up the welds and painted the shield to see how it would look finished.
I also took a picture from underneath, to show the airgap around the alternator. The shield doesn't block any vents for the alternator, just the heat from the exhaust. I'm planning on mounting it to the dipstick mounting tab, I'd like to find a second mounting location. I'd hate to create another rattle in our cars. :P Feel free to give constructive comments. http://www.galantvr4.org/img.php?id=76835&width=400 http://www.galantvr4.org/img.php?id=76836&width=400 http://www.galantvr4.org/img.php?id=76837&width=400 http://www.galantvr4.org/img.php?id=76838&width=400 |
Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
Looks good man, but personally, I don't think I would want to pay more than 30

Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
I don't know what I'm going to charge. I used some scrap we had at the shop. I'd need to buy some sheet steel to make more. I'd only want to break even, so that would dictate price. I enjoy metalworking and I just want people to cover the price of supplies.

Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield

Re: Feeler: Alternator Heat Shield
People with external wgs may have a hard time using that. I know Both me and Project2gs dump tubes go right where that would sit.
I think its a good idea, but you would neeed to make it much less boxy. Use a bender to basically make it bend with the alternator. The other thing would be the fact that its metal and sitting really close to the positive of the alternator, you would need some kind of rubber to make sure it doesnt ground out. |
