Monitor and welding mask...
 

Just a little sidenote maybe you guys can explain.
The other day i got my new auto darkening welding mask i arrived at my work. Well while playing around i was trying to see how bright lights would trigger the auto darkener. (I work for an LED Lighting company and we have some bright lights).
I put the mask right up to some of our LEDs and it didnt darken.
Then when i was adjusting the settings. I noticed it went dark, but i wasnt pointing it at the light anymore. I was pointing at my LCD Monitor which had a blue background and nothing bright on it.
I pointed it to my laptop monitor and it didnt darken, but back to the LCD Monitor and the thing darkens again on the low sensitivity setting.
Anyone know why this would be?

The main thing is that, if its causing a welding mask to darken, but not super bright LEDs that leave me seeing trails after staring at them, what the hell is it doing to my eyes staring at it 10 hours a day.

It probably looks for a certain color or frequency/wavelength of light that is emitted by an electric arc and not by a certain brightness.

Yep, it doesn't darken by how bright something is. Try looking at the sun through it (actually don't lol), it won't darken.

LOL good thing i posted this, because i was thinking the next full eclipse i would be able to go outside with my welders mask and laugh at the people having to look at it through a sheet of paper. Would have owned myself and people would be laughing cuz im blind.

I've used a regular, non-selfadjusting welder's mask (just a lens on it) and looked at the sun and it was dark enough that it didn't hurt my eyes. Kinda cool actually.

Maybe i could just bring a monitor outside with me and hold it up to the sensor on the mask. Then it would work LOL
Or else i could use the cheap mask that comes with the welder (btw those are completly worthless, Having to hold the mask with one hand and weld with the other just makes no sence. :)

I have a Miller auto tinting one here at home I use for Plasma cutting, and I use a Speed Glass auto tinting helmet at work. I thought they worked by having a quick change from dark to bright, I have had auto tinting masks not come on if you are not looking right at the weld, I will try mine tonight and see what happens. I love my auto tinting mask for work, but I hate auto tinting when TIG welding, they put a green ting on things, I have a Jackson mask with a shade 10 gold shield when I TIG at home, really nice clear view.

MIne tints with the sun, or at least with daylight viewed from a dark garage. It also darkens with a normal incandescent bulb or halogen. I don't know, maybe someone with even more free time on their hands can compare spectrum output on all those sources.

You would think daylight would do it, because it's full spectrum. Right?

It might depend more on the settings the mask has and how good the sensors are at picking stuff up. I doubt its off Hz because MIG welding uses DC power which would not alternate to cause a Hz signal from the light during welding. I use my mask for Plasma cutting and I would think it would work with blow torch cutting/welding also.
